Well, it was worth the blisters tbh 🏃🏼‍♀️💨Today I went for my first run in four weeks. I took off to clear my head around 7 pm and just ran and ran. And ran and ran and ran. I ran every darn inch of that nine kilometre — I repeat 9 KM 😍— circuit of pavement, gravel, and grass. So proud of my legs. And so, I bring you one of my classic this-rant-has-nothing-to-do-with-the-photo rants. Gotcha! 🖤Recently I have been steering clear of cardio-focused exercise in favour of strength training to keep my blood sugars in check after landing myself in the ER a month ago. Apparently too much of a good thing is a worse thing. Type 1 Diabetes and exercise is a very strategic balance that requires careful calculations, meticulous planning, and speedy troubleshooting based on your movement patterns, food intake, and insulin dosing and adjustments. Silly me thinking math was reserved for Fs in highschool (never my thang). I'm still trying to make sense of all this 13 years on, but I realize the risk and level of involvement required are some of the reasons I was so overwhelmed by and fearful of incorporating exercise into my routine for so many years. Thanx 2 @justjkr for showing me how to shove self-doubt up my 🍑 I'll never know everything, but I'm gonna try! Lately I've been enjoying getting to know my body and its little biological quirks. There is a moment of pride and joy in perfecting the occasional workout and this is new kind of reward for me. Tonight I had one of those moments ✨ I have learned to be grateful for the opportunity to understand the human body in ways a non-T1D never will: to be the diaboss of my metabolic processes, orchestrate how my body uses food and energy stores for fuel, and being the pilot of my own machine. It's tough going at times, and I'm not always successful in getting my ducks in a row, but I keep running with it (figuratively) 💯| No more excuses, fam. If a diabetic can do it, you can do it. And if a non-diabetic can do it, I will do it … and smarter. That's my new benchmark. Watch me lap you (empty threat). Sometimes you just need a beautiful street to walk down at night. Palmerston Blvd is said to be one of the nicest in the city for just that– taking a stroll!
