Yet another event joins movie releases and professional sports on the list of things being delayed due to COVID-19. The 2020 Olympics are postponed for now. The decision comes after Canada said it wouldn't send its athletes.
The announcement to delay the games was made in a joint statement from the International Olympic Committee and the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee on March 24.
The statement made it clear that the decision had been made to delay the games, which would be held no later than the summer of next year.
The decision was made in order to "safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community."
While the games will be held in 2021, they will still be referred to as the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.
Just days prior to the statement from the IOC, Team Canada had announced that it would not be sending any of its athletes to the games if they were to continue as normal.
"While we recognize the inherent complexities around a postponement, nothing is more important than the health and safety of our athletes and the world community" the team's statement reads.
The team also noted that this is not just about athlete health, but public health in general.

Along with Canada, Australia also said that it would not be sending its athletes to Tokyo if the Olympic games were to go on as planned in 2020.
"The AOC believes our athletes now need to prioritize their own health and of those around them, and to be able to return to the families, in discussion with their National Federations," reads a statement from the Australian Olympic Committee.
