Earlier this week, a scary incident took place at a temple in Canada. According to local authorities, a 29-year-old Kelowna man attacked three people at a Sikh temple. The man has been arrested. He is now facing several charges and is currently in police custody.
On Monday, June 10, 2019, Kelowna RCMP were called to the Okanagan Sikh Temple at around 8:50 AM. Upon arrival, police officials learned a male, that was unknown at the time, entered onto the property and began to act aggressively towards others who were attending the temple.
According to an RCMP media release, one witness told officials that the suspect’s aggrievated behaviour escalated and shifted towards him after confronting the suspect who allegedly grabbed a hold of a woman’s arm.
This is when the suspect entered inside the temple where he allegedly proceeded to assault another male. Following the second attack, the male and the witness managed to wrestle the suspect to the ground.
The 29-year-old Kelowna man has since been identified by police and remains in custody. He is currently facing number of potential criminal charges; none of which have been named by police.
At this time, police and investigators do not believe the man's actions were religiously motivated, despite the attack happening at a temple.
Following the assault, a man was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Police do not believe the woman sustained any injuries, although, they have not heard from her.
Police are saying that both men who helped take down the suspect should be recognized for their bravery and determination, despite being injured during the physical altercation.
“These men more than likely prevented further similar attacks against other innocent bystanders,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna RCMP.
