The plane, which was a small twin-engine Aerostar, was on route from Pembroke, Ontario to Charlottetown, PEI on Monday morning when the crash occurred. Maine State Police and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are now both investigating.

The plane was on approach to the Greenville Municipal Airport when it crashed.According to FAA and police, the plane had diverted to Greenville and declared a state of emergency, citing engine problems just prior to crashing.
Greenville is located in central Maine and would have likely been on the flight path from where the plane took off from in Pembroke, Ontario to it's scheduled destination of Charlottetown, PEI. However, this was most likely an emergency landing and Greenville would not have been a scheduled pit stop for the flight.
The FAA announced this morning that the small Aerostar plane was privately owned and registered to a Canadian pilot.
The names of the victims have not yet been released pending the investigation. The Aerostar plane could seat up to six people but according to the FAA, the plane was only carrying the three people, including the pilot, who was killed at the time of the crash.
