600 Canadian Kids Have Been Victim To Sexual Assault By Their Sports Coaches Over The Past 20 Years, According To Reports

Over the past two decades, at least 222 Canadian coaches have been convicted of sexual offenses according to a joint investigation done by CBC News and Sports. These coaches were all involved in a variety of amateur sports throughout Canada, often coaching students under the age of 18. This study reveals that more than 600 Canadian kids have been victims of sexual assaults from their sports coaches over the past 20 years.

These charges include a variety of offenses including sexual assault, sexual exploitation, child luring and making or possessing any child pornography. Throughout the twenty years, 1998-2018, there have been nine female convictions and 213 male convictions.

However, a sociology professor from the University of Winnipeg Sandra Kirby, states that there could be thousands of other cases that have never been reported or investigated since sexual abuse within the sports world is a very un-reported crime.

These sexual assault cases have occurred all throughout Canada, Ontario having the highest amount of cases at around 90 and Quebec coming in second with around 60 reported cases.

Sadly, all of this doesn't come as a complete shock. A variety of coaches throughout the past two decades have been publicly accused and charged for sexual assault.

In 2016, an Ontario karate coach Satnam Rayat was charged with sexual assault against a nine-year-old student. There was also a case in B.C. where a basketball coach, Codie Hindle, was accused of sexually touching three younger students.

"It's pretty gut-wrenching to see these findings," states Lorraine Lafreniere, head of the Coaching Association of Canada to CBC, "There is a misguided sense of security when you drop your child off at the clubhouse,".

These sexual convictions have occurred in 36 different sports. The most sexual offenses that have occurred in one sport is hockey. 86 hockey coaches have been charged for sexual assault. The second most charged sports coach is the soccer coach with 40 sexual assault charges. While coming in third is martial arts coaches, with 32 charged coaches across the country.

However, Kirby states that 'no sport is immune,". A predator can use any form of sport to find a child who is unattended. Although these cases have taken over the news in the past few years, CBC states that not much has been done to change the rules to help protect young athletes against sexual predators.

Out of the cases that have been studied, 35 cases are still awaiting a trial and have not yet been solved.
