Parts Of Alberta Are Getting Hit With Up To 70cm Of Snow This Weekend

A driver's nightmare, a skier's dream come true.
Alberta Weather This Weekend Shows Up To 70cm Of Snow Hitting Jasper And Banff

Get ready for more snow than you can handle. Parts of Alberta will literally be getting up to 70 centimetres of snow during some especially intense Alberta weather this weekend. This is not a drill. While this may be good news for many snow sports enthusiasts out there, anyone hitting the road should use caution.

Alberta has had its fair share of snow and cold weather this winter. While parts of the province have been having a warm streak recently, there are parts that are not so lucky.

Environment Canada has stated that several parts of the province will be getting a massive amount of snowfall over this coming weekend, some of which starting as early as tonight, Friday, January 31.

The winter storm and snowfall warnings have been issued for four different places and apparently, some parts will see up to 70 centimetres.

It seems as though that Banff and Jasper, in particular, will be in for a winter wonderland starting tonight.

The winter storm and snowfall warning for Banff explains that the Lake Louise area will be getting up to 20 centimetres of snow by Saturday evening.

Snow is expected to start falling this evening so if you are travelling in the area, be careful.

It seems like Lake Louise is getting off easy compared to the rest of Banff.

Environment Canada has stated that hazardous winter conditions are expected along the Icefields Parkway.

Snow is anticipated to begin this evening and last until Saturday evening.

Total amounts of snowfall will reach a whopping 30 to 50 centimetres with "locally upwards of 70 cm."

Along with this intense amount of snow, there will be some serious winds. These winds are expected to substantially reduce visibility on roads.

Environment Canada is even saying that you should consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

But it’s not just the Banff area that will be getting up to 70 centimetres of snow. Environment Canada has issued the exact same warning for Jasper.

The following areas are under the winter storm warning:

  • Highway 93 North - Jasper to Saskatchewan River Crossing
  • Highway 93 South - Lake Louise to Saskatchewan River Crossing
  • Highway 93 North - Jasper to Saskatchewan River Crossing
  • Banff National Park

If you listen closely you can hear every snowboarder and skier cheering with joy.

In addition to winter storm warnings, there will also be wind warnings for several parts of the province.

Altogether there are six areas with wind warnings of up to 90 km/h.
