Getting outdoors to tackle a strenuous day-long hike can sometimes be a turn off for people. However, when rewarded with the most enchanting views in the entire state, the hike becomes 100% worth it, no matter how many hours it took. There's an alpine lake hike in New Mexico that will lead you to the most incredible views of Lake Katherine nestled between tall mountain peaks, and you need to see it for yourself.
This alpine lake is a truly hidden gem of New Mexico, hiding deep in a glacial valley that is completely surrounded by unbelievable views of lush forests and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Lake Katherine lies just below the incredible Santa Fe Baldy and the view from up top is unlike any other.
To get to the point up on Baldy where you can look down on the twinkling turquoise lake below, you will have to head out on a day-long hike up the Winsor Trail.
This hike is long and full of beautiful natural sights and sounds. You'll want to come extra prepared as the hike ranges around 14 to 16 miles in length and hikers claim it can take around 8 hours to complete!
The trek is rated as difficult so you are in for a full-body sweat in order to get to see the incredible mountain top views.
You can set off on your epic alpine hike from Winsor Creek Trailhead off Forest Road 121 or from the Santa Fe Ski Basin.
The trail is most popular from April until October when the snow is melted and the trail is fully accessible. Late August is a fantastic time to visit since the weather isn't too hot and the snow is still gone.
Your pup is also invited on your Lake Katherine journey with you, but make sure they stay on a leash while you're adventuring.
Once you get to the junction where you can hike up to Santa Fe Baldy on the Winsor Trail or go down to the lake on the Skyline Trail, you will be greeted with the most spectacular views in the state.
Opt to go down towards the lake to admire it up close, or choose to hike to the top of the mountain to look down upon the glacial valley in all of its beauty.
