As changes to Canada’s COVID-19 benefits continue to be made, thousands of Canadians have submitted CERB and CESB repayments.
According to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), per CBC News, more than 800,000 returns have already been made.
This includes the return of CERB (Canada Emergency Response Benefit) and CESB (Canada Emergency Student Benefit) payments.
Repayments made to the CRA
While the CRA confirmed that all of these repayments were voluntary, they noted that many were returned due to confusion about eligibility for the different benefits.
A spokesperson for the CRA explained, “There are various reasons why voluntary repayments have been made.”
For instance, if an applicant applied for CERB from both Service Canada and the CRA at the same time, found out that they were not actually eligible for the money, or went back to work sooner than they expected.
Several politicians are now using this figure to illustrate how many Canadians appear to have been confused by the government benefits and their eligibility for the funding.
The exact amount of money that has been returned so far has not been shared by the CRA.
