Andrew Scheer Is Resigning As Conservative Party Leader Months After The Election

In breaking news from Parliament Hill, Andrew Scheer is resigning as Conservative Party Leader. According to reports, he made a formal announcement in a caucus meeting with fellow party members in Ottawa. Following the private meeting, he publicly announced his resignation in the House of Commons.

On December 12, Scheer made a speech in the House of Commons where he announced that he is stepping down as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.

Even though Scheer had previously brushed off calls for him to resign and doubts about his leadership, it's official now that the Conservatives will have a new leader soon.

"This was not a decision I came to lightly. This was a decision I came to after many long hard conversations with friends and family over the past two months since the election campaign," Scheer said.

This announcement comes a few months after Scheer was unable to lead the Conservative Party to a win in the federal election back in October and only about a week after Parliament officially reconvened.

While the party did hold Justin Trudeau to a minority government, the loss resulted in many calls for Andrew Scheer to step down as leader, even from former Conservative politicians.

Many Canadians also took to Twitter to complain about the Conservative defeat. Many said they thought the party could have won under different leadership.

Now, that change is coming.

Even though Scheer was going to face a mandatory leadership review at the party convention in April because he lost the election, that is expected to happen sooner now that he's resigned.

He will also be staying on until a new leader can be chosen.

Scheer called this "one of the most difficult decisions" he's ever made.

While Scheer cited his family and putting them first as the reason why he resigned, a Global News reporter claimed that the resignation may be tied to a new scandal.

According to Mercedes Stephenson, it was revealed that the Conservative leader had been using party funds to pay for his children to attend private school.

The Conservative Party confirmed they were helping to pay for Scheer's kids to go to school but deny that it was a factor in him stepping down.*

In his speech, he also encouraged that the party keep working together.

"My only ask to my fellow conservatives is this: let's stay united," Scheer said.

After his speech, Scheer received a standing ovation from both sides of the House along with hugs and handshakes from his fellow Conservative MPs.

Trudeau also made a short speech about Scheer's resignation.

"I want to thank him deeply for his service to Canada," said Trudeau.

He then walked over to Scheer and the two shook hands and hugged.

Scheer will remain the leader until a Conservative leadership convention can be held and a new leader elected.

There is no news yet on when that will take place.
