Andrew Scheer's 2005 Speech On Why Gay Marriage Shouldn't Be Legal Just Came Back (VIDEO)

With elections just around the corner, things are starting to get heated in Canadian politics. On Thursday morning, conservative Andrew Scheer was put into the spotlight when a liberal leader re-posted a video of Scheer that was taken back in 2005. In the video, Scheer is seen reciting a speech on why gay marriage shouldn't be legalized.  Since the speech has resurfaced, many Canadians have been sharing their thoughts towards it. 

On Wednesday morning, Ralph Goodale, the Liberal Minister of Public Safety & Emergency Preparedness released a 50-second video of Scheer reciting a speech against why gay marriage shouldn't be legalized back in 2005. 

In the tweet, Goodale states, "To be a leader for all Canadians, the Conservative Party leader should now end his lifelong boycott of Pride events and explain whether he would still deny same-sex couples the right to marry, as he said in Parliament." 

According to the Star, the video that Goodale has posted showcases 25-year-old Scheer giving a speech on why the Civil Marriage Act should not be passed in Canada. 

Yet, it wasn't just Scheer who opposed the act back in 2005. During this time, all of Harper's caucus voted against legalizing same-sex marriage. Yet, the act still passed through Parliament on July 20, 2005. 

In the video, it seems that one of Scheer's main concerns about same-sex marriage is that it does not allow couples to have children, which is "important to society".

Scheer states, “There is nothing more important to society than the raising of children, for its very survival requires it. Homosexual unions are by nature contradictory to this."

On top of this, Scheer also states, "They cannot commit to the natural procreation of children. They cannot, therefore, be married.”

However, this is only the beginning, Scheer also goes on to use a dog metaphor to get his point across by saying, "How many legs would a dog have if you counted the tail as a leg? The answer is just four. Just because the tail is called a leg, does not make it a leg." 

Since the video has been released, a lot of Canadians are finding it slightly unsettling, stating that as a diverse country, 2005 Scheer should accept everyone equally. 

On the flip side, however, it seems that many Canadians are claiming that Scheer shouldn't be accountable for his actions back in 2005, and that he isn't the only one to blame for going against same-sex marriage at the time, as many Liberals also voted against it. 

Despite the opinions, it's ultimately up to you to decide your take on the 2005 video.
