There's long been a misconception about men and women wearing durags. If you're spotted outside in one, you're automatically given the side-eye by most people. One Atlanta festival is attempting to destroy the negative stereotype associated with this huge staple of Black culture by in turn celebrating the quintessential headpiece. Durag Fest is hitting Atlanta and it's the ultimate ode to blackness.

The "No cap, just flap" festival is taking over Murphy Park Fairgrounds on Sept. 27 for an evening dedicated to both Black men and women. You'll be surrounded by intricate durags with bold designs, along with hairstyles that make a statement.

If your hair is short enough, you might just want to sport your durag for the "wave competition." Yes ladies and gents, there's a competition to see if your waves are deep enough to drown in.

There's style to be admired at the festival, but there's also food to fill up on. There are local Black vendors from all over the city. You already know the food will be top-notch because one of the actual requirements to be a vendor was to "be able to season food." If you went to Taste of Soul, expect food at that level.

Every guest you see will be a walking masterpiece, and there will also be other art to admire in the creative pieces of the art show.

There are multiple facets of Black culture being celebrated, not just the style. You'll come across freestyle video booths and dance classes that commemorate the culture that has given so much to society.

Even though you get so much from this festival, you don't have to pay a dime to get in. It's free; all you have to do is RSVP.

Afropunk is right around the corner and also another opportunity to honor the black community.
