This All-New Atlanta Restaurant Serves Up Shark Meat On Their Gullah-Geechee-Inspired Menu

There's a new spin on soul food in the city.
New Atlanta Restaurant Has A Unique, Shark-Like Spin On Soul Food

Atlanta is abundant in different cuisines to satisfy all your cravings: Japanese, Mexican, Jamaican, Thai, Ethiopian and way too many others to name. There's been one culture that has had a void in the Georgia food scene until now. You can uncover all the Gullah-Geechee culture has to offer at Atlanta's new restaurant, Virgil's Gullah Kitchen & Bar.

This new eatery is serving up staples of the oldest and most iconic Black cultures in the United States. It's more than just a restaurant, it's a cultural experience. You can take a trip down to Sapelo Island to understand the culture or you can head down to Virgil's. You might be scratching your head at what exactly Gullah-Geechee means, but when you bite down into a dish from this unique menu, you'll start to get a better idea.

Here's a quick history lesson. The Gullah-Geechee people are descendants of West African slaves. Because of their isolation on the coast of the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida, they were able to preserve a lot of their rich culture, which is super rare.

Even their menu plays into their Creole language. Have you ever tried "watuhmelon & cucumba salad", "bussin cornmuffins," or "vegan okra perloo?" If you have, it probably doesn't compare to what Virgil's is serving up.

One of the most distinctive parts of the menu are the "shawk bites." Chances are you've probably never had shark meat, but it's a huge part of the Gullah-Geechee culture. Vegans and vegetarians aren't left out in the dark either, as there are plenty of rich menu options to satisfy a plant-based lifestyle.

Even though the food is incentive enough to stay, there are events nearly every day of the week. Various DJ's, live performers, and guest panels take over the restaurant throughout the week, so it's a guaranteed social hour whenever you walk through the doors.

Virgil's is home to strong drinks, delicious food, and a raging good time. This new Atlanta powerhouse is beckoning you to come through the doors.

You can celebrate more Black excellence at Afropunk festival in October, which features an international food market with local vendors.
