The Atlanta Zoo Is Opening An All-New African Savanna Habitat This Summer

The zoo in Atlanta is always coming up with new exhibits to show each year and hold different events to spotlight animals. Zoo Atlanta announced that they will be adding a whole new area for their African animals sometime in the summer of 2019. Zoo Atlanta is creating a whole habitat for African savanna animals including elephants, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, mercats, and warthogs.

This will give the creatures a larger area to roam and guests a ground view look at them, instead of having to be up on a higher platform like in other parts in the zoo.

The animal care team here is taking every precaution in moving the animals and making sure they adapt to their new home well.

This Savanna will allow giraffes, zebras, and ostriches to live together and this is something they will have to get used to.

The website says that there are behind the scenes areas in this new habitat so the giraffes, zebras, and ostriches can get used to their new home, as well as each other before they are fully moved into the African Savanna.

The elephants of the African Savanna get their own new habitat and it is triple the size of their former area that they were living in since they arrived at Zoo Atlanta.

One pretty neat feature that the zoo is including in the elephant's area is the water. There will be a waterfall and a 360-degree pond so they will really feel like they are in Africa and not in rural Atlanta.

There will also be an indoor facility that will allow seven elephants to live and roam, and it replicates an outdoor habitat. This way, guests can see first-hand, the treatment and care of the animals by the keepers.

The exact date of the opening all depends on how well the animals adapt to the new area, and how long it takes them to be comfortable, but they have already started to move in two elephants to start the process.

Coming later in 2019, you will be able to see white rhinos occupying some of this space, as well as lions, according to their website.
