Avril Lavigne Opens Up About Being A Young Canadian Artist In A New Interview And It's So Heartwarming

When I was a little girl, Avril Lavigne was one of the first artists that I truly fell in love with, and if you talk to other Canadian millennials, plenty of them feel the same way. Although the singer disappeared from the public eye for quite some time, she's recently made a comeback. Avril Lavigne 2019 interview talks about her experience as a young artist in Canada.

Recently, the singer sat down for an interview on the Zach Sang show to talk about her new album, Head Above Water, her upcoming tour, collabing with other artists, and of course, what life was like for her when she first got started in the music industry.

When the interview first begins, the show's host, Zach Sang, is in literal awe of Lavigne (as I think we all would be, tbh). He goes on to talk about how her music has "shaped culture at large", and then goes on to ask her how a young girl from Canada was able to have such an impact on an entire generation.

Lavigne then comes to the realization that it's now been 17 years since her single Complicated came out, and she was just 17-years old at the time of the song's release.

"I came out during this time when Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, NSYNC... everything was super pop music. When I was making my album, I just wanted guitars and I wanted to sound like a band. I wanted to express myself as an artist... I was embraced by a record company, even though [pop rock] wasn't the thing at the time."

The singer then went on to talk about how LA Reid, the man who discovered her, really encouraged her to stick with the unique style that she had developed, rather than choosing to pair her with stylists and change her look the way they do with other artists.

Lavigne also spoke about how when she was first getting started in the industry, she had to fight to write her own music because she hated the songs being pushed her way. She spoke about how songwriting came so naturally to her, and that it's almost a "magical" experience.
