Your takeout order is about to get a whole lot more fabulous. A local bar in Kelowna is having B.C. drag queens deliver food and wine right to your door starting on Tuesday, March 31. Social distancing has never been so easy and sassy all at the same time.
Friends of Dorothy Lounge in Kelowna, B.C. is known as the Okanagan's first LGBT2Q+ bar.
With amazing cocktails, some of the best music, and local food this place has really made a name for itself.
But shortly after opening, they needed to close down because of COVID-19. While it was a sad day, owner and founder Rudy Tomazic isn't taking one second off from putting in “werk.”
By changing his business model and keeping his employees safe, Friends of Dorothy is now offering delivery service, but with a twist.
This won't be your ordinary SkipTheDishes order as local drag queens will be delivering the food to you.
Talk about dinner and a show.
Local queens Freida Whales and Ginger Snapp are known all around Kelowna for their gut splitting comedy, flawless makeup, and extravagant looks but now they are adding another talent to their resume.
“I'm excited to be a part of this to bring something new to the table and to break up the monotony of the isolation I know most people are feeling,” told Ginger to Narcity.
“Sure, we're still going to abide by the social distancing rules but to be able to go out and represent our small community in a time when we as a whole population need something bright and positive is amazing."
The sparkling duo will be in charge of delivering all the food from Friends of Dorothy directly.
Narcity spoke with Tomazic about his new business model.
"There wasn't any place in Okanagan that was LGBT2Q+ driven. Everybody is welcome and that’s one of the things that was important to me,” said the owner of the bar.
“We had great support from the community but we just go rolling and this happened.”
Narcity has been told that Freida will be in charge of driving while Ginger delivers the food.
“It’s a positive thing. Entertainment on your front lawn will certainly add some shock value,” said an enthusiastic Tomazic.
While this is no doubt fun, there will be strict protocols in place to ensure the safety of both the queens and the community.
The main one is that you cannot tip. If you have ever been to a drag show you know tipping is not only encouraged, it’s necessary.
But during delivery, the only tips that will be accepted will be those given upon payment of the food over the phone.
The two queens will also not take any cash payments as every transaction will be done over the phone with the employees working at the lounge via credit card.
“We are keeping the bar as clean as we can and as low impact as we can,” said the owner of the bar.
This delivery service will be starting on March 31, and the menu sounds wonderful.
From handmade pizzas named after famous drag queens to pretzels and ribs, the menu has all your cravings satisfied.
And don’t worry if you have dietary restrictions, vegan and gluten-free options are available for the pizzas.
In addition to the food, you can also purchase a bottle of wine.
The Okanagan is known for its wineries so there will be tons of local wines to pick from.
Starting on Tuesday, the full menu will be up online. All you need to do is call in, place an order, and wait for the queens to arrive.
“I’m super excited to bring drag to your doors! It’s going to be a whale of a time,” said Freida.
