Bed Bugs In Canada Are "Thriving" & These Cities Are The Worst

If there is one thing that definitely should have been left behind in 2019, it's bed bugs. However, according to a new report from the Canadian pest removal company Orkin, Canada’s bed bugs are already “thriving” in 2020, and they’re showing no signs of backing off! In fact, Orkin has revealed the top ten cities with the worst bed bug infestations in Canada, and the results are pretty skin-crawling.

Orkin’s latest research has discovered that Canada’s bed bugs have been increasingly thriving since the early 2000s, rising from a “rarely experienced irritant” to a “major problem” in homes and businesses across the country.

While the tiny pests are happy to reside in both clean and dirty homes alike, the company explains that the worst infestations are often found in larger cities and travel centres, which is definitely bad news for Torontonians and Vancouverites.

While 2019 saw a "significant" number of bed bug infestations across the whole country, it's Toronto that wins the "worst bed bug problem" award, having already topped the list back in 2018.

The rankings are based on the number of commercial and residential treatments carried out to remove the creepy crawlers by Orkin Canada between January 1 and December 31, 2019.

While Toronto has topped the list of worst bed bug cities once again, Winnipeg, Vancouver and St. John’s are not too far behind, with Ottawa taking the number five spot.

While the idea of hosting these creepy little critters in your clothes, bed or home is definitely gross, there are some simple solutions to avoiding an infestation.

For a bed bug-free 2020, the pest removal company has some handy tips and advice for Canadians.

Their report explains, "Bed bugs are extremely efficient hitchhikers. They can move easily across a room and climb onto luggage or anything left on a bed in just one night.”

Orkin recommends carefully examining all bags and clothing, drying potentially infested items on the highest heat setting and inspecting all second-hand furniture before bringing it into your home.

Bed bugs can be identified by tiny dark coloured stains on fabrics, unusual bite marks on humans, or live bugs in your home.

They're most commonly found on mattress tags and seams, under seat cushions, behind headboards, in the creases of drawers, and under wallpaper and carpets.
