With 195 countries in the world, there is a lot of competition to be the best. According to a new ranking, Canada is doing pretty well on the world stage. The list of the best countries in the world for 2020 includes the Great White North and it's partly because we have the best quality of life.

This year's Best Countries Report by U.S. News ranks Canada as the second-best country in the world overall. This is a step up from last year when it came in third.

The northern country maintained its dominance in the rankings with high scores in the quality of life, citizenship and business categories.

With a total score of 9.9 out of 10, Canada just barely missed out on the top spot, which went to Switzerland.

"This year's Best Countries rankings continue to show us human rights, diversity, sustainability and free trade are all top of mind for many worldwide, connecting us together," Michael Sussman, CEO of BAV group said in a news release.

"These fundamental topics are vital to a nation's brand strength and reflect how the quality of life can have a dramatic influence on global perception," he said. The group contributed to the report.

Of the nine categories looked to determine the best countries, Canada ranks in the top 10 when it comes to citizenship, entrepreneurship, open for business and quality of life.

The country's perfect score of 10 in that last category means that it is safe, has a stable economy, a good job market, well-developed public education and health care systems along with being politically stable, according to the report.

It also stated that our home and native land is seen as the most trustworthy in the world.

Despite all the good things in the ranking, there is still room for improvement.

Even though Canada has a lot of natural landscapes ready to be explored, it ranked 16th in the world when it comes to adventure.

Of the five factors looked at for the adventure category, it scored low on fun, pleasant climate, and sexiness.

The report also said the country could also improve in the heritage category by having more cultural attractions and in the movers category by having a more unique and distinctive economy.

The report is done annually by U.S. News & World Report, BAV Group and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

They rank and analyze the perceptions of 73 countries around the world and see which ones have the most influence globally.

So even though Canada has some things to work on, it's still nice to be one of the best in the world.
