Politics can be very polarizing and not everyone is always on board with whoever gets elected Prime Minister. Of all leaders from the last century, the one thought to be the best has a pretty big connection to our leader now. But the best Prime Ministers of Canada from the 20th-century survey shows that Canadians really don't know a lot about our past leaders.
In a survey by the Association for Canadian Studies, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, the father of current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, is thought to be the best Prime Minister from that time with 15% of people responding that he was the greatest.
However, a more surprising take away was that when it comes to our country's leaders from the previous century, a lot of Canadians don't actually know who was the best one.
The other leaders from that century barely had anybody responding that they were the best and only Lester B. Pearson came close to Trudeau with 10%.
In fact, 42% said that they don't know enough about Prime Ministers from the past to say who was the best or who is the most popular of them all.
The one voted most popular, Pierre Elliot Trudeau was Prime Minister from 1968 to 1979 and then again from 1980 to 1984.
He's well known for signing the Constitution Act in 1982 which gave Canada full sovereignty and establishing the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
For the leaders in the past, Trudeau is more popular in Ontario and Atlantic Canada than any other leader during the 20th century but isn't considered the greatest in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
In Quebec and B.C., he's tied with other leaders for the top spot.
He's also the most popular with English speakers but falls behind Brian Mulroney and Wilfred Laurier with French speakers.
Of the people who didn't know enough about the Prime Ministers to pick which one they liked the best, 62% are 18- to 24-year-olds which we can forgive because some of them weren't even alive then.
It'll be interesting to see if, in the next century, the Trudeau that's currently in office will be remembered as the best Prime Minister of his time period.
