Botanical Garden In North Carolina Is A Tribute To Queen Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth's reign in the Golden Age is characterized by fanciful royalty that is still valued today. Though the times have changed drastically, the Queen's legend lives on. The cherished era can be celebrated at this whimsical botanical garden in North Carolina.

The combined beauty of cultural structures and vibrant plants creates a one-of-a-kind experience at the Elizabethan Gardens. Located on the renowned Roanoke Island on NC's coast, this oceanfront flower frenzy is a land of fairytale dreams.

The historic site, a project of the Garden Club of North Carolina, was completed in 1960 to honor Sir Walter Raleigh’s lost colonists, who lived in this very spot more than 400 years ago.

Queen Elizabeth I was a fan of lush elaborate gardens during her reign, so this cultural tribute aims to mimic the fabulous aesthetic that brought her joy.

With the awe-inspiring horticulture surrounding you at every angle, this magical fantasy land is full of the intricate beauty that defined society in the 1500s.

You may even feel like an early 21st-century queen yourself as you frolic through 10 acres of unique flowers, stone statues, historical structures and detailed creations made from brush and hedges.

The Gardens, open to the public for all to enjoy, boast over 500 species of extraordinary plants including camellias, hydrangeas, historic herbs and a wide range of coastal varieties.

History literally lives on here. An iconic attraction popular among visitors is the rose garden that actually contains a rose given by Queen Elizabeth II from the royal garden at Windsor Castle.

According to the official website, there's also a towering ancient oak that is believed to have been alive since 1585.

This may be a place you'll want to frolic in more than once. Luckily, you'll have a different experience every time you visit because the full-time gardeners change flower displays seasonally to highlight in-season botanicals.
