If you're a fan of the Whopper, chicken fries and those gold crowns this is good news for you. New Burger King Canada locations will open in the country in the next five years to get in on the "underpenetrated burger market" in Canada. That means there will be even more places for people to get their burgers from in the near future.

The home of the Whopper, when compared to McDonald's, doesn't have all that many Canadian establishments right now.

There are only about 289 across Canada's provinces whereas McD's had almost 1,500 in all 10 provinces and two territories in 2018.

But BK is now trying to heat up the burger competition by opening more than 100 new locations in Canada over the next five years.

"For far too long, Canadian burger lovers have not had enough flame grilled options to choose from," said Matt Wright, general manager of the company, in a news release.

"Premium ingredients and signature recipes have defined Burger King for 50 successful years in Canada. We're excited that even more Canadians will be introduced to the iconic Burger King brand and our great tasting food," he added.

Most of the chain's current restaurants are in Ontario with 124 restaurants in the province, followed not so closely by B.C. which has 39.

The fast-food giant's new spots will be in Manitoba and Ontario thanks to an expansion deal with Redberry Restaurants.

This will increase the number of restaurants by 25%.

"We are so excited to expand the Burger King brand in Canada. We've been a proud Burger King Canada partner for 15 years and we can't wait to light the fire in those grills in more than 100 brand new locations," said Ken Otto, CEO of  Redberry, in a news release.

Right now, there are only 13 BKs in Manitoba, most of which are in Winnipeg. So, this new expansion will bring the famous Whopper to even more people in the province.

While McDonald's leads in Canada with more than a thousand more locations than Burger King, this expansion will pull them above another popular chain.

Wendy's had 368 restaurants in Canada in 2018, meaning BK's plan to open more than 100 new establishments could bring it over that number.

Though the planned expansion is spread out over five years, the new establishments will be open as soon as next year.

About 10 new ones are expected to open in southwestern Ontario, specifically, in 2020.
