While checking Alberta's weather report, we realized that almost the entire province of Alberta is under a weather warning from Environment Canada due to extreme cold! You read that right. Very few areas of the province were left out of the somehow unanimous weather warning for extreme cold. While extremely cold temperatures vary across the province, we can all agree that it is so cold it may be better just to stay inside.
The alerts page on the Environment Canada website is so long, it looks like a telephone book. In fact, over 180 areas around Canada are currently under weather warnings. These warnings vary depending on the region and are anything from extreme cold, “blistering winds,” freezing rain, snowfall, or all the above. And let's just be thankful, we aren't part of the all the above.
Out of the province of Alberta, 25 warnings have been issued all stating that extremely cold weather is on the horizon. A majority of the wicked weather that is ahead will be -40C to -50C with the wind chill. So if you were planning on going outside, don’t.
According to the statements, this arctic air will remain in Alberta at least until tomorrow afternoon. Wind chills are expected to be fridged this afternoon, reaching a potential of -50° C. The cold air is also expected to cause extreme cold once again tonight and into Thursday morning before some moderation tomorrow afternoon.
In weather like this, you should be watching for cold-related symptoms. This includes shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness, and colour change in fingers and toes. Extreme cold can be dangerous, so be sure to look after yourself and your loved ones.
If you insist on leaving the house, be sure to cover up! And we aren’t just being a nagging parent. In weather like this, frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with the windchill.
Pet owners, this warning is for you. If it is too cold for you to be outside it is definitely too cold for your fur baby to be outside. Bring them inside, curl up on the couch, and enjoy some snuggle time.
While this weather is horrid, take comfort knowing that we are not alone in this. Most of Saskatchewan is under extreme cold warnings as well, and even Vancouver has issued wind and cold warnings this morning.
I don’t know what us Canadians did to deserve this terrible weather karma, but it must have been bad.
