Even though Christmas has come and gone, there are still plenty of magical winter activities going on across Canada! This January, check out the Ice Magic Festival in Alberta for a twist of magical winter goodness that we've all come to love about the season! At the beautiful Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, there's a massive Ice Carving Competition where you can see these melting masterpieces come to life.
The Ice Magic Festival is a carving competition that's a unique blend of physical and artistic abilities. You have to be strong enough to wield a chainsaw, but gentle enough to detail the delicate ice! Plus, there's no better setting for an event like this than the real-life winter wonderland of Lake Louise.
This year, the theme of the festival is 'Celebrating 25 Years Of Ice Magic,' since this is the 25th year of the festival. Competitors will construct massive ice carvings to reflect this theme in their own creative way.
The Ice Carving Competition takes place over two days, from January 16th to January 18th. You can see finished sculptures during the next week or so after the competition. You'll get a chance to explore the ice bars, castles and carvings. It's especially beautiful to visit at night when they're magically lit up!
While you're there, you can check out all the winter sports available nearby like ice skating, tubing, skiing and snowboarding. If you're feeling indulgent, then you can splurge on a meal or cocktails inside the Fairmont to warm up!
The Ice Magic Festival at Lake Louise takes place from Wednesday, January 16 to Sunday, January 27. It's free to attend from Monday to Friday and before 10 a.m. or after 5:30 p.m. on the weekends. You'll need tickets to attend during peak times and they're around $10. Check out their website for full event listings and more information.
