Although Calgary is a pretty big city, once you've lived here long enough, it's pretty easy to run out of things to do. I have plenty of friends who always talk about how they and their significant others are tired of doing the same old thing every time they plan a date night, and that they really want to try something new.

Sometimes in order to have fun, you need to step outside of your comfort zone! Lucky for all of us, there are so many amazing spots to visit that are right outside of Calgary! If at least one of you has a car, or you don't mind renting, the world is your oyster. Here are some road trip ideas near Calgary that you and your significant other NEED to check out this spring:

Banff Gondola

Distance from Calgary: 1 hour and 40 minutes

If you're looking for romance in Alberta, no doubt about it, one of the best places to find it is in Banff. Maybe you'd rather throw on your sneakers and head out for a hike, but if you're not one for mountain climbing, we definitely suggest taking a ride on the Banff Gondola! When you reach the top you'll have some amazing views to behold, besides your s/o, of course.

Frank Slide Interpretive Centre

Distance from Calgary: 2 hours and 12 minutes

Frank Slide is one of the most historic spots in Alberta, so if you have the chance to check it out you definitely should. What was once home to a small town has now been reduced to a massive pile of rocks and rubble. The scene can be pretty heartbreaking but it's also very cool to see such a unique part of history.

Lake Louise

Distance from Calgary: 1 hour and 57 minutes

When the ice finally melts and spring is in full swing, what could be more romantic than renting a canoe and taking a paddle around Lake Louise? The area is usually full of tourists, but really, can you blame them? This beautiful, crystal clear lake is one of the many wonders that our province has to offer! Your girlfriend or boyfriend will love the experience.

Edmonton

Distance from Calgary: 2 hours and 58 minutes

Getting tired of YYC? Why not make a little road trip up to our other major city and do some exploring there? Edmonton has so much to offer from the massive mall with a waterpark and amusement park to the shops and restaurants on Whyte Ave!

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump

Distance from Calgary: 1 hour and 49 minutes

If you grew up in Alberta like me, odds are good you've taken a field trip to Head-Smashed at least once. This spring, take the time to revisit the World Heritage Site that exists just two hours away from Calgary! There's so much to learn and see here, you definitely won't be bored.

Glacier Skywalk

Distance from Calgary: 4 hours and 15 minutes

If you're up for some serious adventure, the Glacier Skywalk is where it's at! Although it won't reopen until May, we highly suggest you and your boo check it out this season. Trust us when we say that the four-hour road trip will be well worth it when you get to see the infamous glaciers and the Rocky Mountains below! Plus, who doesn't love a romantic road trip?

Radium Hot Springs

Distance from Calgary: 3 hours

Ah, beautiful British Columbia. If you get the chance to sneak out of Alberta, even if only for a day, you should go for it! Radium Hot Springs is not too far from Calgary, and after a long day of driving, you and yours can throw on your swimsuits and go for a soak in the refreshing spring water.

Bar U Ranch National Historic Site

Distance from Calgary: 1 hour and 10 minutes

When people say that Alberta is "cowboy country", we all want to deny it. We do offer a lot more than just horses and prairie, but I think that places like Bar U definitely do prove that the stereotypes aren't totally untrue. Learn a little bit more about the ranching lifestyle, grab some food, and snap plenty of pictures!

Ma Me O Beach

Distance from Calgary: 2 hours and 25 minutes

It's almost that time of year again! The Weather Network has said that we're in store for an early spring, although we can expect to see bouts of cold coming throughout the later months. Be sure to take advantage of those early, warm days and head to Ma Me O Beach! You and yours can have some fun in the sun, hang out in the water, or even just enjoy a picnic lunch.

Sylvan Lake

Distance from Calgary: 1 hour and 45 minutes

The little town of Sylvan Lake will make you forget that you're even in Alberta, at least for a while. Even if it's not quite warm enough to take a dip in the water yet, you can still hang out on the sand, explore the town and meet the friendly locals, or snap some fun couple photos to post up on Instagram.

Lake Minnewanka

Distance from Calgary: 1 hour and 25 minutes

If you want to go on an adventure with a view, Lake Minnewanka is where it's at. It's definitely a bit less tourist-populated than Lake Louise, so if crowds aren't your thing, but you still want to see all that beauty, this is the perfect spot for you and your significant other.

Royal Tyrell Museum

Distance from Calgary: 1 hour and 35 minutes

Sometimes you just need to feel like a kid again, and in my opinion, one of the best places to do that is the Royal Tyrell Museum! Standing amongst all those fossils will definitely have you feeling pretty small, and it's always cool to observe what kind of amazing creatures roamed around here before us!
