Summer is around the corner and you know what that means — cuffing season is now over. If you’re not familiar with what Cuffing Season is, that’s probably a good thing. Essentially, the only way I can explain cuffing season is dating during the winter season. You look for a partner to do all the cute holiday stuff and then dump them when spring/summer is in bloom.

No one wants to be alone during the holidays but ain’t nobody wanna be cuffed during the summertime. How primitive of us, ya animals.

However, with cuffing season coming to an end, this breeds an influx of break ups and the desire to pick up your phone, download one of those awful dating apps and tediously swipe right until your finger gets numb (or until you run out of swipes).

Basically what i’m getting at is that you’re probably gonna meet new people this summer and you’re probably gonna go on a first (probably tinder) date.

Mixed in with personal experience and some suggestions from local Vancouverites -- here are some dope local spots to take your first date:

1) MashUp // The Vancouver Art Gallery

Cost: $18-24 (each)

The art gallery is a safe bet to take your first date. You can gauge how interesting they are and if you can actually hold a conversation with them while y’all look at modern art. Also, if you find that you’re not having a great time with your date, you can wander off and meet up at the end of the exhibit. Or you can make out in a dimly lit corner, your call. The exhibit runs till June 12th, where you can still see the 3rd and 4th floors.

2) Beer Island // Olympic Village

Cost: $10/15 for a Growler fill

Going to a park near the water is an optimal place for a first date. You’re in public, yet still kinda secluded if you pick a sweet spot. You can fill up a growler and share good conversation with your date. If it’s going well, you can grab some grub nearby and if it sucks well then at least you’re still buzzed in a park.

3) Sunset Wine // English Bay

Cost: $10-20 for your favourite bottle of wine

Same idea as the last. Going to the beach with a bottle of wine during sunset is a pretty simple date idea but always a goodie. You can also walk the seawall before you decide to settle into your spot and watch the sunset.

4) The Sunday Service @ The Fox Cabaret // Main Street

Cost: $7 (each)

More than two Vancouver locals suggested the Sunday Service as their first (and second date) go-to spot. It’s an improv show at the Fox that runs every Sunday at 9PM. It’s $7 to get in and a great place to share drinks and laughs.

5) Earnest Ice Cream // Fraser St.

Cost: $5 Single Scoop, $7 Double

I don’t really need to sell this one because ice cream sells itself. They make all of their ice-cream in the back of their shop at their Quebec St. location. They offer vegan flavours, and both of their locations are extremely accessible. I suggest trying the London Fog with Serious Chocolate. Super good.

6) Daytime Stroll // Commercial Drive

Cost: $5-20

Commercial Drive is a great place to get to know someone. It’s a cool vibe with really dope spots to stop for food. You can get a slice of pizza at a place called Via Tevre on Victoria, then go for some gelato. Also, if you’re driving you don’t have to worry about it being busy or paying for parking so the effort you put in is pretty minimal.

7) Lynn Canyon Park // North Vancouver

Cost: $0 (Bus Fare, probably)

Lynn Canyon Park has a nice little trail and some really cool lookouts. It’s pretty basic but going for a walk with your date is a great way to get your endorphins going and break the ice. There's a little cafe out there where you can grab a drink with your date, too.

8) The Score // Davie St.

Cost: $20-30

This is a really cool spot for brunch or lunch. The vibes are good and their onion rings are killer. They’re famously known for their Caeser’s which will definitely fill you up. It’s a really laid back vibe where the drinks are flowing and hopefully so is your conversation...and if it's not, then at least you have liquor.

9) Live Music @ The Biltmore Cabaret // Mount Pleasant

Cost
: $10-30

The Biltmore is one of my favourite venues to see a show. It's cozy, intimate, and always a good time (even if your date is a total bore). Cost depends on what you're trying to see but its worth it. Check out their calendar here.

 10) Tacos @ Gringo // Blood Alley, Gastown

Cost: $15-20

Located in Blood Alley in Gastown, Gringo is an inexpensive lil' taco bar. Their Austin taco is really fricken' good and their staff is super friendly. 10/10 recommend for a first date.

11) Cartems Donuterie // 6th and Main

Cost: $10

Cartems is a great place to meet up with someone for the first time. It's casual, you can grab a donut, some coffee, and play board games. They also have some in-house events that they host from time to time. You can check out their schedule here. I recommend checking out their open mic at their location on Main street, which happens every other Tuesday at 7pm.
