Truth Or Dare: What Would You Do For More Likes?
Social media is ruining our lives.
It's no secret that social media has seeped into all areas of our day-to-day lives, as well as society as a whole.
Everyday, we are bridging the gap between the virtual world and reality: Signing up for apps like Instagram and Snapchat instantly opens you up to a endless number of “viewers” who can log in and watch every detail of your life that you chose to share.
From your sister's wedding in Tofino to the snap you took at Republic last night, our followers can keep tabs on even the most mundane aspects of our lives. Facebook gives our “friends” access to all of our personal info, including details we might not even share with someone we meet face to face for the first time.
And while social media has many positive aspects, there are definitely as many negative ones. This is exactly what Nerve, the summer's hottest new movie, is all about:
The movie revolves around high school senior Vee Delmanico (Emma Roberts) who's had it with living life on the sidelines. She is persuaded by her friends to join the popular online game Nerve, where users are asked to select between being a “Watcher” or “Player”.
Watchers pay to watch and Players play to win by completing dares. Vee decides to sign up for a seemingly harmless dare, but quickly finds herself caught up in the thrill of an adrenaline-fueled competition partnered with a mysterious stranger (Dave Franco). The game begins to take a sinister turn with increasingly dangerous acts, leading her into a high stakes finale that will determine her entire future.
Sounds pretty intense right? Just wait till you watch the trailer.
So why watch this movie? Aside from the fact that you get to see both Franco and Roberts in their underwear (swoon!), the movie is a true depiction of what it could be like to get caught up in a world of trying to please others online through social media. How far are you willing to go to create an online persona that is different from your true self?
Although there are many benefits to the usage of social media, the film shows how dangerous it can be to put your life on display and how addictive it can become for the “Watchers” to raise the stakes without suffering any personal repercussions.
Want to have your views on social media changed forever? Definitely watch Nerve, out in theatres July 27.
