Nanaimo Bars

This no-bake morsel of creamy, chocolatey, sweet goodness was invented in no other than Nanaimo in Vancouver Island. Thank you to the Island.

California Rolls

Most people already know by now, but if you didn't, california rolls were invented in Vancouver. Yup, Canada. Vancouver chef Hidekazu Tojo of Tojo's Restaurant created this sushi roll in order to cater to local taste buds.

Chinese Buffets

During the constuction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, many Chinese workers were hired by labour contractors during the 1880s. With a large Chinese community, Chinese chefs in Gastown probably thought it was a good idea to make Chinese food buffet style. Thus, the first Chinese buffets.

The Egg Carton

Honestly, I don't even know what they would've used to hold eggs before egg cartons. The egg carton was invented by Joseph Coyle, a newspaper editor in Smithers, in 1911 because a hotel owner in Aldemere claimed that the eggs from his local farmer were constantly being delievered to him broken.

Cosmetic Botox

Yeah! Botox! This one surpised me too! North Amercia's no. 1 cosmetic procedure was accidently discovered in 1987 by two Vancouver doctors, Jean and Alastair Carruthers. Botulinum toxin (aka botox) was used by Jean to treat one of her patients with abnormal eye contractions. Turns out the treatment actually made her wrinkles go away. And thus, the new anti-aging technology.

The Hollow Flashlight

If you haven't been keeping up with Forbes' 30 Under 30 List, you've been missing out, because 19-year-old UBC student and inventor, Ann Makosinski,  created a flashlight that can be powered from the heat of your palms.

Ryan Reynolds

Heartthrob Ryan Reynolds from The Green Lantern, Deadpool, The Proposal, and more, is from nowhere other than Vancouver. Come on world, you know you need him in these films. Who else would you drool over?

Seth Rogan

From Freaks and Geeks to The Interview, Seth Rogan has been bringing the world some serious comedy since an early age. Who would be James Franco's BFF if Seth didn't exist?

Carly Rae Jepsen

"Call Me Maybe" is basically 2012's summer anthem. Thank you to our Mission girl Carly Rae Jepson for bringing us the epitome of pop music.

Greenpeace

Greenpeace is known as one of the world's largest and most visible NGO environmental organizations, raising public awareness about climate change, deforestation, overfishing, commercial whaling, genetic engineering, and anti-nuclear issues...and it all started in Vancouver in 1969 with The Don't Make A Wave Committee.

The Occupy Movements

So you've heard of "Occupy Wall Street", well actually, the movement was initiated by Vancouver based social activist magazine, Adbusters. And from there, the movement has inspired many other Occupy protests around the globe.
