Vancouver's Park Board has officially approved the redevelopment of Oakridge Centre to include a 9-acre public green space, an outdoor event pavilion and a rooftop park.
The rooftop park will be accessible from the roof of Oakridge Mall, and is slated to become Vancouver's best new spot for concerts, events and summertime hangouts with a view. Entrance to the rooftop park will be lined with grove trees, and will have plenty of seating to relax in the sun or shade.
Artist renderings of the new space illustrate all of the exciting amenities to come. Some of these include an interactive water feature, sports and fitness fields, an 800 metre running track, an outdoor event pavilion, an off-leash dog park, an orchard, lounge chairs and patio sets complete with umbrellas.
The new park's iconic design, the multi-use features, and modern layout will transform the Oakridge Centre area into a true urban oasis. Space will be divided into six spaces, each of which has something unique to offer - Civic Centre Park, Upper Green, The Commons, The Meadow Gardens, The Woodland, and Pocket Park.
All six of these spaces will be linked together by walking paths. The space is even large enough to host music festivals, and could host up to 3,000 attendees. The area can also eventually accommodate up to 2,600 new homes, made up of over a dozen condo buildings and affordable housing units.
According to the Vancouver Park Board, the redevelopment will be split into two phases. The first phase is expected to be complete by 2023, and the entire project could be complete as early as 2025.
