In July 2017, a girl was found dead in Central Park in Burnaby and there had been no arrests or suspects since. The case remained unresolved for over a year, until now. A man has been charged with the murder of 13-year-old Marrisa Shen.
Ibriham Ali was been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Marrisa Shen this past weekend. The suspect is currently in police custody. Ali was born in 1990 and is a 28-year-old Syrian national who is now a Canadian permanent resident.
Update on Marrisa Shen Investigation: #IHIT will be hosting a news conference this morning at 10am at BC RCMP HQ to announce significant developments in the homicide investigation of 13-yr-old Marrisa Shen. pic.twitter.com/okHzpaDpMe— IHIT (@HomicideTeam) September 10, 2018
New evidence came in two weeks ago and Ali was arrested last Friday. His next court appearance will be on Friday morning. Investigators believe that the murder was random and that Shen and the suspect did not know each other. Ali had been living in Canada for three months at the time of murder.
This discovery comes two months after the anniversary of Shen's death, and at that time, no suspects had been identified, even though investigators had followed up on hundreds of tips, reviewed 1,000 hours of video and conducted hundreds of interviews. The RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team had asked the public to submit new information on the one year anniversary.
This has been one of the longest investigations IHIT has ever encountered. More updates to come.
