Vancouver was named the third best city in the entire world for quality of life standards for 2019. It was the only Canadian city to make it onto the top 10 ranks. Not only that, but it was also the only city in North America named in the top 10 list. Vancouver has consistently been the highest-ranking city in the continent over the past 10 years, says Mercer.

For the annual rankings, Mercer looks at a variety of factors to determine which cities around the world have the highest quality of life, including housing, education, public services and transport, natural environment, political, economic and social environment. They analyzed over 230 cities around the world.

Even though other Canadian cities didn't make the top 10 list, they were recognized for having a high standard of safety. "In North America, Canadian cities continue to score highest with Vancouver ranking highest for overall quality of living, as well as sharing the top spot with Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Calgary for safety," stated in their news release.

However, that wasn't the case for the rest of North America. Mercer says that most cities in the continent declined in personal safety, such as the United States, where overall safety in cities declined.

"All US cities covered in the analysis fell in the rankings this year, with Washington DC the biggest faller," read the release. "The exception was New York, rising one place as crime rates in the city continue to fall."
