If you're looking for an excuse to break out your pretentious black turtle neck, then good news. There are a bunch of poetry readings taking place across Vancouver this summer, some which even offer workshops, too!
For anyone looking to stray from their usual evening festivities, check out one, or even all, of these awesome upcoming events. Perfect for switching up your next date night, and who knows, maybe you'll even get inspired to participate!
1. Word Whips Writing Series // Britannia Library, 1661 Napier Street
If you love writing as much as you love listening to other people's work, stop by on the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 6:30 to 8:30pm to participate in a super neat workshop. Random writing prompts will be provided, with a sweet opportunity to share your masterpiece at the end!
2. Open Mic Thursdays // Cafe Deux Soleils, 2096 Commercial Drive
Sign up at 7:30pm, and then put your name in a jar. The show will start at 8:30, and the performers for the night will be drawn. If performing isn't your thing though, then just sit back with a drink and watch the entertainment.
3. Vancouver Poetry Slam // Cafe Deux Soleils, 2096 Commercial Drive
Same deal as above, except it takes place every Monday instead. The 4th Monday of every month is also youth night, featuring performers between the ages of 14-22.
4. Vancouver Story Slam // Cottage Bistro, 4470 Main St
Stop by on August 9th at 8pm to listen to some wicked stories and cast your votes for the best one. Although it's not poetry, it's still definitely worth checking out!
5. Shout! Clap! Slam! // Listen here
If you don't have time to head downtown and catch a poetry reading, don't sweat it. The best of the Monday night poetry slam at Café Deux Soleils is recorded live every week, and conveniently posted on their SoundCloud incase you missed it.
6. Open mic night // The Fairview Pub, 898 West Broadway
Stop by on August 1st and 3rd for open mic night! Check out a variety of music and spoken word poetry from all kinds of different performers, and grab some drinks while you're at it! 19+ only.
7. All ages open mic // Trees Cafe, 450 Granville Street
Stop by on Thursdays throughout the summer to either participate in or watch the open mic night at Trees Cafe. From poetry, to stand up comedy, to music, you never quite know what you're going to get. Plus, they have cheesecake.
