It's easy to fall into the same routine, whether in daily life or in a dating relationship. To change things up, sometimes it's best to just go back to the simple days.
It's time to take a cue from the 20th century. These dates are super romantic and super different. Keep things fresh with your date or significant other and keep them on their toes. Escape back to the time of diners and drive in theatres.
These super cool, old-fashioned places in Vancouver are all you could ever dream for for a retro date. Turn back the clock and get ready to be nostalgic for a time period in which you probably weren't even born yet.
1. Drive-In Theatre // Twilight Drive-In, Langley
Ever wanted to watch a movie at a drive-in theatre like Sandy and Danny in Grease? Well you still can make like the 1960s and enjoy a movie and cuddles from the comfort of your car. The Twilight Drive-In is Metro Vancouver's drive-in theatre and currently offers screenings every weekend.
2. Old Fashioned Diner // Sophie’s Cosmic Café, Kitsilano
This whimsical, retro style diner is a MUST try in Vancouver. You will feel like you entered into a different world as soon as you step foot into this restaurant. Can it get any more retro than a date at a diner? Also, their breakfast will help you start the day right.
3. Soda Fountain Shop // Glenburn Soda Fountain and Confectionery, Burnaby
Get a taste of the 1960s while splitting a milkshake with your date. This vintage ice cream shop serves up some of the best milkshakes and malts in Vancouver. All of their treats are presented in vintage-style glassware to add to the retro vibes. Glenburn's milkshakes, malts, old-fashioned sundaes and sodas will make for the sweetest retro date you could ever dream of.
4. Horseback Riding // Copper Cayuse Outfitters, Pemberton
Feel like you and your date are Buttercup and Wesley in The Princess Bride and ride off all romantically into the sunset. Copper Cayuse Outfitters offers scenic horseback riding tours into the backcountry around Whistler and Pemberton. Perfect for a day trip!
5. Conservatory Garden // Blodel Floral Conservatory, Vancouver
Relive Anna and William's charming adventure (sans the trespassing) in Notting Hill. Gardens are a part of so many love scenes in old Hollywood films, like You've Got Mail and The Sound of Music. Make it a part of your love story too (as cheesy as it sounds). This conservatory is probably as close as you can get to a lush tropical garden in Vancouver and you can even go for a scenic stroll in Queen Elizabeth park after.
6. Historical Museum // Burnaby Village Museum, Burnaby
Experience history come to life and see the 1920s right before your eyes. Burnaby Village Museum is a 1920s tram-stop community village featuring heritage and replica buildings. They also have a restored 1912 C.W. Parker Carousel so you and your date can go for a ride. Admission is free so what more convincing do you need?
7. Record Stores // Zulu Records, Red Cat Records
Rock out to music and remember the good old days of vinyl. There are several independent record stores throughout the Lower Mainland to fulfill all your vinyl desires.
8. Roller Rink // Central City Arena, Surrey
Live out That 70's Show and Roller Boogie by skating at the roller rink. If it's your first date, it's the perfect excuse to hold each other's hand. Central City Arena offers indoor rollerskating.
