Lantern festivals are a 2200 year old traditional Chinese practice marking the end of Chinese New Year celebrations. Other places such as Thailand, Brazil, Hawaii, and Mexico also have their own cultural history with floating lanterns.

The 23rd Annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival is on Wednesday December 21, 2016. The Secret Lantern Society aims to honour several cultural traditions through this annual festival. Brighten up the darkest night of the year with lanterns, fire, music, dancing, and more!

This free event begins at 6:00 pm. There will be lantern processions taking place in each of the four neighbourhoods. Afterwards, you can enjoy multicultural performances and activities in an indoor venue.

Watch as four different Vancouver neighbourhoods become transformed and illuminated by a constellation of lantern lights. Each festival aims to emulate the character of it's neighbourhood, and the communities participating are Yaletown, Granville Island, and Chinatown/Strathcona.
