When you think of the most Christmassy holiday colours, you usually think of cheerful reds, bright greens and snow white. This year, why not add the colour blue to that list and check out the magical Sea of Lights at the Vancouver Aquarium!
The halls of the aquarium are all decked out for the season and you can see the marine debris holiday tree created by a B.C. artist using items collected from our shores. As you walk through the exhibits, make sure to look out for the mistle-toads hidden around where you can steal a smooch.
The first thing you see when you walk inside the aquarium is the big and adorable electric eel who helps to light up the Christmas tree with his powers. At 11:30 every day, the eel has his breakfast and puts on an eel-ectrifying display!
Snap pics at the ultimate selfie-station—the jellyfish snowglobe! Tiny spotted jellyfish mesmerize as they float around their beautiful blue tank. Get someone to take your photo as you stand in front of the tank because it creates an ethereal silhouette that looks magical.
New this year to the Aquarium is their Bubbles interactive experience inside the Underwater Dolphin Gallery. It looks almost like the deck of an alien spaceship! Recreating the sensations of life underwater, you’ll be surrounded by the sights and sounds of the ocean. This magical feature lets you play around with the bubbles, lights and music in an immersive setting.
Take a rest inside the aquariums theatre and catch a holiday classic! An expedited version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 4-D shows run throughout the day. You’ll experience the blowing cold winds and snow of the North Pole right inside the theatre!
One of my favourite things about visiting the aquarium during the holidays is catching a glimpse of Scuba Claus as he dives into the holiday spirit to visit with his fishy friends inside the Strait of Georgia habitat.
If you can believe it, the Aquarium is open 365 days a year—even on Christmas! You can catch the Sea of Lights at the Vancouver Aquarium now until Sunday, January 6. Their full program schedules and opening hours are on their website.
