If you've ever dreamed of being in Thailand during Loi Kathrong for their famous lantern festival, you're not the only one. I've seen so many pictures on Instagram of the dreamy and magical lighting ceremony with thousands of bright and shimmering lanterns being lifted into the sky and have wished a million times that I could be there immersed in its radiant atmosphere.
But I realized, one doesn't have to look that far to experience a magical lantern festival as such because Vancouver hosts its very own as well! The 24th Annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival will be taking place this year on Thursday, December 21. The Secret Lantern Society aims to honour several cultural traditions through this annual festival. Brighten up the darkest night of the year with lanterns, fire, music, dancing, and more!
This free event begins at 6:00 PM. There will be lantern processions taking place in each of the four neighbourhoods including Yaletown, Granville Island, Chinatown, and Strathcona. Afterwards, you can enjoy multicultural performances and activities in an indoor venue.
Watch as four different Vancouver neighbourhoods become transformed and illuminated by a constellation of lantern lights. Each festival aims to emulate the character of its neighbourhood.
Don't miss out on your chance to see the lantern lights and participate in a longstanding tradition of many cultures.
