Thrifting can be so rewarding, but also terribly daunting. The thought of searching through rack after rack of unwearable clothing just to find that one perfectly worn flannel is almost enough to make me run to UO and spend 5x the cash on the same kind of shirt.
Winnipeg has a pretty great thrift and vintage scene, but some shops are better than others. I've gathered a few of the best spots to thrift in the Peg so you don't break the bank or waste your time.
Value Village on Nairn // 970 Nairn Ave
It's the newest and biggest VV in the city with a huge shoe section and endless amounts of men's and women's jeans. The only downside is the seemingly major price hike at every VV (go on a 50% off day to avoid this).
The Ruby Slipper Vintage Shoppe // 370 St. Anne's Rd
A carefully curated (but very large) collection of vintage finds. There are some seriously cool items to be found here—if you're willing to dig—and it's not too pricey, either
Nettie and Min & The Vintage Saint // 210 - 70 Albert St
Hands down the most amazing collection of vintage wear in Winnipeg. Browse the racks in their Exchange District studio, or find them at Modern Supply Co. or most craft and vintage markets in the city.
MCC Thrift Shops //445 Chalmers Ave, 644 Burnell St
MCC Thrift Shops are arguably the best thrift spots in the city. They're all HUGE (especially the Chalmers Ave location), with a wide selection of furniture, art, clothing, and books. The prices are extremely cheap, and all the other young thrifters are busy shopping at Value Village, so your only fellow shoppers are retired folk who definitely aren't there to snatch up all the worn flannel and high waisted jeans. Score.
Goodwill on Princess // 70 Princess St
Some Goodwill shops have an extremely limited selection, but this one is one of the best—especially the cozy book section. Plus, prices are a lot cheaper than VV (and they have a ton of sale days!)
Salvation Army on Goulet // 145 Goulet St
It's a pretty big store with a little bit of everything—mainly appliances and clothes. Check here to find some hidden gems in jackets and dresses (or about a million used popcorn makers).
Plato's Closet // 1094 Nairn Ave
This trendy, colourful consignment store is weighed down with lot of Forever 21 stuff, but occasionally Topshop or Wilfred will sneak their way into the racks. They also organize their stuff by colour as well as clothing type, making it even easier to sort through.
Habitat For Humanity ReStore // 60 Archibald
This furniture restore space is every DIYer and Pinterest-lover's dream. Clawfoot bathtubs, couches, appliances, doors, and cabinets can all be found in this St. Boniface warehouse.
Spence Street Thrift Shop //555 Spence St
The entire shop was redone last month, making it extra inviting and organized. Proceeds help support Pregnancy and Family Support Services, and they often have bag day sales ($6 for an entire bag of clothes)
WildWoodRose Vintage // Etsy shop
This online shop is based in Winnipeg and has handpicked vintage items in amazing condition. It's the best place to find amazing, unique dresses for a wedding or holiday party you've got coming up.
Style Confidante // Online shop (p/u at Garden City Mall or Fort Garry area)
These items are carefully chosen and cleanly photographed, making searching through them extra easy. Most importantly—they're super cheap!
The Closet Chick // 956 Portage Ave
This Portage Ave consignment shop is an upscale clothing boutique—they have extremely strict guidelines on what they accept (only in-season and near-perfect condition). Prices can range from a $5 skirt to a $220 pair of shoes.
Vintage Glory // 380 Donald St
Everybody's favourite eclectic shop in the Exchange is always packed to the brim with funky hats, sweaters, and tees.
Heartthrob // Online & Pop-up stores
This company curates the perfect balance between trendy and vintage with beautiful printed blouses, the perfect pair of flare jeans, and patterned dresses. They showcase their stuff on Instagram and hold pop-ups around the city—the next one is December 13 at Modern Supply Co.
