Surprise, surprise but according to a recent analysis by CBC’s Marketplace, Winnipeggers are smacked with the most expensive parking tickets in all of Canada. The study found that the max fine here is almost twice the average ticket in Toronto and three times the average ticket in Halifax.
While most cities in the Marketplace report named one specific spot as the worst place to park, here in Winnipeg we were graced with an entire street. So for all of you parking on William Avenue from Tecumseh to Sherbrooke, beware! Last year $96,000 in fines were given out to more than 1,000 drivers on the north side of the street alone. When adding together both sides of the street, more than 2,500 drivers got a ticket on this block.
To avoid shelling out money on a pesky parking infractions, keep your eyes peeled. The reason why so many people get ticketed in the area is because of the hidden crosswalk on the street. With no white paint or lights, it's easy to overlook the crosswalk when parking and even easier to get fined.
Overall, Winnipeg gave out close to 500 tickets a day, generating around $13.6 million in 2015.
