Eating out is great: you get to leave your house, most likely with good company and have somebody else cook your food for once. But we all know that it's a lifestyle not many can afford, and in a city where most of the population is made up of students, we're constantly on the prowl for the cheapest- and tastiest- options around.

Lucky for you, we've rounded up a variety of Halifax's best and affordable food joints, where you're guaranteed to get the biggest bang for your buck.

1. The Loaded Ladle // 6136 University Ave.

The Loaded Ladle is a Dalhousie student-run and student-funded program that provides healthy and delicious meals free of charge to people who might not otherwise be able to afford a vegan meal. This incredible organization also works within the Halifax community, focusing on food justice and food politics, working with charities and independent organizations within the city. Go visit them on the 1st floor of the SUB Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 1pm for more info!

2. Burrito Jax // 2515 Blowers St.

Everyone knows burritos are some of the most filling foods around, and Burrito Jax uses some of the freshest ingredients around, so you can be full while still being healthy. Get a large burrito for less than $10 and if you don't finish it, save it for later, and you'll have two meals for under $10!

3. Bud the Spud // 1551 Grafton St.

Bud the Spud is one of Halifax's most beloved food trucks, with good reason. They use P.-E.-I. potatoes to make the freshest, hand cut, homestyle fries around, and their fish and chips are guaranteed to change your life. Trust us on this one.

4. Indochine Bahn Mi // 1551 South Park St.

If you love Vietnamese food, Indochine Bahn Mi is the place for you. With most items on the menu under $10, you can choose from a variety of flavourful options, like bahn mi, pho, bowls, and asian fusion tacos.

5. Mary’s Place Café II // 5982 Spring Garden Rd.

Mary's is definitely a student favourite, being located so close to the Dalhousie, King's and SMU campuses, and serving huge, delicious portions for cheap. The intrigue of having all-day classic breakfast foods in the same place as Middle-Eastern cuisine is often what attracts people, and whether you get the delicious shawarma or the famous eggs benny, you will not be disappointed.

6. Krave Burger // 5680 Spring Garden Rd.

Adequately named, after you eat one of these burgers, you're sure to be krave-ing another for weeks to come. Krave has some of the most unique burgers in all of Halifax, and most of them are $9 or under. No regrets here.

7. Tarek’s Café // 3045 Robie St.

Tarek's is a lesser known Greek and Lebanese joint, but those who do know it adore both the food and the service. Tarek's has some of the cities most loyal customers because the quality of the food is so good, the portions are huge, the price is reasonable and the owners make you feel like you've been invited to a family dinner at their own home.

8. The Wired Monk Coffee Bistro // 5147 Morris St.

The Wired Monk is famous for its large variety of delicious coffees, but we recommend accompanying that coffee with one of their hearty soups, flavourful salads or perfectly constructed sandwiches. They use seasonal vegetables to enhance the flavour of every meal, so you can guarantee their fall menu is rich and delicious.

9. Thai Express // 5201 Duke St.

Thai Express takes a healthy twist on fast food, and a modern take on traditional Thai cuisine. The service is speedy, which is convenient for students in a rush, but they never compromise on taste.

10. Truly Tasty // 6214 Quinpool Rd.

Ramen lovers, this one's for you. Truly Tasty on Quinpool is an adorable little joint that offers some of the best ramen I've ever tasted, but don't take my word for it- go try it out for yourself. The affordable price makes it the perfect spot for a date if you're on a budget.

11. Elle’s Bistro // 1678 Barrington St.

Elle's specializes in Canadian comfort foods, with an emphasis on all-day breakfast, and who doesn't love all-day breakfast? Another restaurant that's not afraid to pack as much as they can onto your plate, you will definitely not be leaving this place hungry.

12. Portland Street Creperie // 55 Portland St., Dartmouth

Finally, if you've got a craving for crepes and are willing to make a trip out of it, take the ferry over to Dartmouth and hit up Portland Street Creperie. To quote their website, the father-son duo who opened the Creperie together put "a Nova-Scotian twist on a European favourite," and not only are the crepes delicious and more-than-reasonably priced (most crepes are between $4-$7), but the homey feel of the place will have you coming back time after time.
