We seem to always think about the bad sides to Ottawa, but what about if we thought about all the good sides to the bad things in Ottawa? There is always a positive side to things, and if you look hard enough, like reallllly hard, you'll find it.
I wouldn't say Ottawa has unlimited things to do, but we definitely have something that we love about this city and that makes us proud to call it home. We've sort of been sheltered (#blessed) here in Ottawa, and I'm not complaining about that. But there are a few things that have ruined our perspective on the rest of the world. So here are 13 reasons why Ottawa ruins you for life (in the best way possible).
You become demanding when it comes to public transportation.
Since OC Transpo is basically wherever you are, all the time, it makes for some pretty annoying realizations when you realize that not every place is as lucky as we are.
You think everyone in the world is as nice as the people in Ottawa.
Don't even get me started on people in the states. A hi would be nice.
Your expectations are never that high.
Your favourite artist is FINALLY going on tour after 8 years of no new music, aaaand they only go to Montreal and Toronto. It's fine, we prepare ourselves for it.
We get to travel for cool things.
Since a lot of artists don't come here, we get to make a weekend out of travelling for just a concert. Which we all don't mind! We get to make more exciting memories in another place.
Everywhere you go, you expect there to be nature near by.
How long do you have to drive to reach nature in Toronto? Exactly. We can drive down the road and find a place we never knew existed.
It's home to the hottest Prime Minister ever.
You don't have to agree, but if you disagree, you're wrong.
We never give up on our sports teams.
Ottawa sports teams have definitely taught us to never give up on anyone. Look at the Ottawa REDBLACKS who won the Grey Cup last year! The Sens always surprise us and I mean, the 67's are still a team which is amazing on it's own.
There is always something to look forward to here.
Whether it's Winterlude, The Tulip Festival, PoutineFest, BluesFest, etc, people may call Ottawa boring but with these kinds of festivals it's far from it. We're lucky to even have a PoutineFest, tbh.
You can handle any kind of weather.
Business trip to California or Alaska? We can handle it, don't worry.
We have everything we'd ever need just in the ByWard Market.
Let's agree that the ByWard Market is the best market in the world. It has over 600 shops, restaurants, and personal services and you can genuinely never get bored there. It's the place to be in the summer!
The legal drinking age is 19, but about 10 minutes away it changes to 18.
I think we're all over that point where we go to Hull to drink, but we definitely made memories there and ones we are not proud of.
Celebrities from your all time favourite TV shows grew up here.
Kirsten Cohen from the O.C., Chandler from Friends, Stella from How I Met Your Mother, Cristina Yang from Grey's Anatomy–the list goes on. I mean, Imagine seeing Matthew Perry in front of you at Dollarama.
You become used to living in a small but big city.
Moving to Toronto would be too overwhelming, and moving to Smith Falls is way too small. You're forever searching for the right amount of both, but Ottawa is the only place. Sorry!
