There are things you should never do in the middle of a thunderstorm, like oh say stand in the middle of a wide open field with a kite for example.
Really you just shouldn’t be outside at all, sure the odds of being killed by lighting this year are 1 in 960,000 and about 1 in 12,000 in your lifetime. So to say the concern about it actually happening is pretty low would be an understatement.
But an Ottawa man’s dedication to his barbeque almost got him killed recently and proved that a 1 in 960,000 chance isn't as rare as you would think.
Sarp Kizir is a food writer based in the nations capital and was out cooking on the barbeque in the middle of a thunderstorm this weekend.
This, of course, is not a good idea and mother nature seems to have decided to give him the scariest warning possible.
A bolt of lightning landed just feet from Kizir, who conveniently was filming his cooking session with his phone's camera.
Kizir then does exactly what just about everyone in this situation would do, which is yell “Holy S*it,” at the top of his lungs.
Kizir then, of course, uploaded the absolutely must-see footage to social media. If you watch the video VERY closely you can see the bolt of lightning lands no more than about 10 feet from Kizir.
You can see the incredible footage below.
I’m pretty sure I was within a few feet of 1 billion volts of electricity just now. Good thing I RECORD EVERYTHING, EVEN MY OWN EXTREMELY CLOSE BRUSHES WITH DEATH. ⚡️⚡️#luckytobeAlive #closecall— RoughChop Ottawa (@RoughChopOttawa) July 2, 2018

Let's all let this serve as a lesson to us all, no hamburger is worth dying over so if there’s a thunderstorm stay inside and avoid being killed while cooking.
