Now that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have finally announced their engagement, it's hard for all of us to not be jealous of her. Not only does she get to marry a prince, but she becomes part of the Royal Family. *sighs* Must be nice.
While we may not be able to marry a prince, we can definitely feel like a princess here in Ottawa. If you've never had high tea before, then you're totally missing out. High tea is usually a social event, where people drink tea while eating pastries, mini sandwiches, and other small snacks. It's a British tradition since they needed a light meal in the afternoon. And of course, like everything, we adapted the tradition as well.
High tea is perfect for a birthday, for a get together, or if you and your friends just want to feel royal AF. Here are the best places in Ottawa to go for high tea so you don't always have to be jealous of Meghan Markle.
The Tea Party Cafe
Where: 119 York St // ByWard Market
Why you should go: The Tea Party Cafe not only has an adorable name, but everything about this cafe is adorable. Their high tea is served daily from 12 pm to 5 pm, and there are two different types that you can get. One is $18 and one is $24, which is super reasonable! The difference in prices just means if you want an additional cheese plate and crudite.
The Vanitea Room
Where: 551 Somerset St W // Centretown
Why you should go: Unlimited mimosas, that's why. Oh and they have delicious high tea that can be for breakfast, for the afternoon and made vegan and/or gluten free as well. All of the high teas available have desserts as well as mini sandwiches and baked goods.
Where: 240 Kennevale Dr // Barrhaven
Why you should go: Cafe Cristal is a stunning cafe hidden in Barrhaven, but what a lot of people don't know is they actually have high tea. You get a variety of baked goods, desserts and sandwiches with this one as well as your choice of tea. If you're looking for a spot that low key, here is the place to do it!
Quelque Chose Pâtisserie
Where: 379 Richmond Rd // Westboro
Why you should go: You honestly don't need a reason to come to Quelque Chose Pâtisserie. From their stunning decor to their amazing macarons, you can just imagine how delicious their high tea is. Available only at their Westboro location, you get mini sandwiches, scones and croissants, macarons, and your choice of tea. This place is to die for, and coming from someone who loves macarons, you will not be disappointed.
Crossroads Tea Room
Where: 40 Gore St E // Perth
Why you should go: Crossroads Tea Room is a vintage tearoom that offers such an elegant high tea. You can either get it with tea or with sparkling wine, but it comes with sandwiches, mini desserts, and fresh scones. Yum! It is a bit of a drive outside of Ottawa, but if you're one that loves a road trip, an hour drive for tea will seem like nothing.
Where: 1 Rideau St // Downtown
Why you should go: Because if you want to feel like royalty, the only real way to really feel like that is to drink tea in a castle. And the Chateau Laurier is the closest thing we'll get to a castle in Ottawa. Zoe's Lounge is located in the Chateau Laurier, and their high tea is to die for. While it is a little bit pricier, you get the experience as well as a pretty legit high tea meal.
Nectar Fine Teas
Where: 1250 Wellington St W // Wellington West
Why you should go: Nectar Fine Teas is a quaint but adorable tea spot, so quaint that they only have 4 tables that seat 2 people. It's super important that you make a reservation for this high tea, or else you may not get in. Just like the others, it comes with mini sandwiches, scones, and mini desserts as well as tea.
Where: 9 Bridge St // Oxford Mills
Why you should go: Brigadoon Restaurant is just passed Kemptville, which is about a half an hour away but the drive is seriously worth it. Not only is the outside of the restaurant beautiful, but so is in the inside. You get mini sandwiches, mini cream puffs, scones, custard tarts and your selection of teas. You can also add champagne to it too!
