Summer is the season to soak up every bit of summer sun that you can. Seriously, before we know it the leaves will be changing colour and we'll be needing to take our boots out from the closet! Before the dreaded cooler weather rolls in, we all need to make every minute of summer unbelievable. Whether you head to a beach or simply go for a walk, get outside any chance that you can, I promise it's worth it.
Ottawa has some pretty cool things happening each summer. From firework shows to kayaking, there is always something you can do during the summer. But why not change it up a bit and try something totally new?! This summer a floating waterpark will be just 30 minutes from Ottawa and you have to add it to your bucket list.
Wonders Of Sand is a festival that happens in Gatineau every summer. The festival showcases the beauty of the Beauchamp Lake, the Outaoais and the city of Gatineau, and of course, our own city of Ottawa. The festival brings together over 15,000 people annually to compete in the most epic sandcastle making competition you will ever see. The sand and water festival is completely free, so if you decide to go, you don't need to break your bank account!
The festival has been going on for over 15 years and each year it gets better and bigger. Wonders of Sand is a chance to discover and experience the technical and creative aspects of sand sculpting, made by professionals as well as beginners. As soon as you see the crazy sculptures you will be in awe. During the winter, us Ottawans see ice sculptures pretty much every year and now that it's summer, it's time to be amazed by something different.
The crazy floating waterpark offers up a great place to have a ton of fun in the sun. The Aquazone is a festival favourite. It's an adventure park containing twenty inflatables on the water, concrete canoes and water raft races, and the Big Splash (huge water gun battle). What sounds more fun than having a water gun battle with hundreds of people?! If you're someone that loves water, then this festival is a summer must.
Every year the Wonders of Sand evolves by creating themes and special events to make each experience more exciting and unique. The sculptures are made using only a few kilos of sand but the huge ones need up to tens of tons! Artists spend up to 60 hours sculpting around 40 tons of sand. These masterpieces are then showcased at the amazing Wonders of Sand festival.
If the waterpark looks a bit familiar, it's because it is! The same people that created the giant permanent floating waterpark in Barrie also rent their waterparks for different events. The waterparks are developed by Okanagan Wibit and they're perfect for a summer day! The waterpark has a 750 feet long water slide with breathtaking views of Gatineau and Ottawa. There are plenty of obstacle courses throughout the floating waterpark so you're in for a seriously fun time. If you can't make it out to Barrie this summer, this waterpark is a great alternative!
Wonders of Sand festival will be from July 6th to July 8th. It is sure to add a splash of fun into your summer. Admission is completely free (just bring some money for parking). The festival's address is at Main Street, St-René Intersection in Gatineau. It is only a 20 minute drive out of Ottawa! For more information about this fun festival be sure to visit the website here.
