The holidays are fast approaching and no matter what you celebrate, there's something every festivity has in common: food!

Yes, food and you have a love/hate relationship during this time of year (you LOVE the food, but then hate yourself soon after for consuming the entire box of shortbread cookies your aunt brought to Christmas dinner), but that doesn't mean anything is about to change.

During the holidays we all crave something hearty, rich, and ideally warm because let's be honest, it's cold af outside.

So aside from the delicious family dinners and at-work potlucks, here are some foods all over Toronto you should be trying ASAP:

1. Peking Duck @ Peking Man

Peking duck is freaking delicious, and if you've yet to find out for yourself, make sure to do it at the place that serves the absolute best peking duck in Toronto: Peking Man. This is a shared dish, which makes it perfect for holiday outings; sharing is caring amirite?

2. Hot Chocolate @ SOMA Chocolate

If you haven't tried SOMA hot chocolate you have NOT lived. I'm not kidding, the line is 100% worth it. The smell alone in the adorable, little shop (where you can watch the whole process of how they make the chocolate) will have your head in a chocolate-y cloud. You can get this liquid gold in a shot version or more traditionally, in a mug with hot milk or water. Mmmmmm.

3. Meat Pies @ The Pie Commission

There's something so comforting about meat pies, and well, pies in general. There is definitely no shortage of pies at The Pie Commission, which claims to have "bloody good pies!" (we can't disagree.) The gourmet pies are made from scratch in-store and come in so many unique flavours: braised beef rib, butter chicken, and beef n' beer, just to name a few.

4. Matzoh Ball Soup @ Caplansky's Delicatessen

There's nothing better than a bowl of warm soup when the "weather outside is frightful", which is why Caplansky's matzoh ball soup is a no brainer when it comes to winter eats. While mostly known for their delicious smoked meat sandwiches, this soup should not be overlooked.

5. Dumplings @ Mother's Dumplings

Dumplings are like little warm hugs for your mouth...okay that was kind of weird, but you get the idea. Ask any true foodie in Toronto and they will tell you that the best dumplings can be found at Mother's Dumplings. The recipes all came from the owner's mom, therefor the name really is fitting and it's obviously the reason why these pockets of goodness are so great here.

6. Perogies @ The Saint Tavern

You either love pierogi or you LOVE perogies. The Saint has taken our favourite Polish dish and upgraded it: their pierogis are filled with cheddar, cabbage, and PORK BELLY! Total game changer. And then yes, in true pierogi fashion, covered in herbed sour cream.

7. Pho @ Golden Turtle

The Golden Turtle, which has gained a cult following over the years, is your one-stop pho destination. Pho is perfect for the winter season because, well, when isn't pho amazing? There is usually a line during peak hours at the Golden Turtle, but don't let that scare you, the service is extremely speedy.

8.Tagliatelle Pasta with Porcini Mushrooms @ Stelvio

This fairly new Northern Italian eatery can be found on Queen St W. near Spadina and should definitely be visited this holiday season. The space is extremely cozy and charming (take note of the unique artworks on the white brick walls)  and the food is warm, filling, and authentic; Their pastas and polentas will have you feeling like you're enjoying your meal in the mountains of Torino, rather than DT Toronto.

9.  Georgian Mule @  e11even

Nothing beats a Moscow Mule right? That might be true...until you've tried a Georgian Mule. This twist on the original has a nice peachy taste to it due to the Peach Ciroc, which is also combined with Amaretto, fresh lime juice, and ginger beer. This is the perfect holiday drink (and trust me, we've tried them all) that you should grab, especially before a Leaf's game, since e11even is conveniently located just across from the ACC!
