Summer might be ending soon but that doesn't mean that the fun stops there. There is always something going on in the city and this weekend, Toronto is pulling out all the stops for this year's TIFF.
Every September, the city is packed with movie stars and celebrities for a weekend of glamour and of course, films! Whether you're a die hard movie fan or not, there is a whole lineup of things to do at the International Film Festival of Toronto and luckily, I've rounded up a few:
Catch this year's highly anticipated films
If there is one thing you absolutely must do at this year's TIFF, it's this. There is an incredible lineup this year featuring movies of all genres like Battle of The Sexes which recreates the 1973 Tennis match between Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell). And if you're in the mood for a thriller, make sure to check out Mother! which features Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem as a couple whose lives are turned upside down when some uninvited guests show up at their home.
Another fan favourite of course is Dunkirk, which will be presented in IMAX at the Cinesphere. You might even spot director Christopher Nolan sitting beside you!
Grab a picture with some of your favourite actors
The beauty of the Toronto International Film Festival is that it's the one time that Toronto gets graced with some of the industry's best actors/actresses. This is your time to grab a selfie and an autograph from your favourite celebrities! So who will be gracing the red carpet this year? Expect to see Jennifer Lawrence, James Franco, George Clooney, Jessica Chastain, Angelina Jolie and more!
Check out the ARTO LIFEWTR art installation on Festival Street
ARTO LIFEWTR is a new premium bottled water that fuses creativity and design to serve as a source of inspiration, as well as hydration, to usher in a new era of thirst quenchers. Their bottle label features rotating artwork which is created by emerging artists. Basically, every bottle is a canvas for creators and artists to share their work! During #TIFF17 opening weekend, ARTO LIFEWTR will feature an 8-foot interactive art installation that will showcase artwork from international artists Jason Woodside, MOMO and Craig & Karl in the heart of Festival Street.
Best of all, artist Jason Woodside will also be there live painting a piece of the art installation with bright and bold colours on Saturday, September 9th until the 10th from 12-6 PM. His work has been featured in New York City, Paris, Los Angeles and even Sydney so you're not going to want to miss this event on King and John!
And if you can't catch the art installation on opening weekend, don't stress! It will be moved to David Pecaut Square following TIFF opening weekend until Sunday, September 17th.
Join the conversation with Angelina Jolie
If you missed her on the red carpet, you're going to want to mark this date on your calendar. On Sunday, September 10th, Angelina Jolie will be discussing her most recent project, First They Killed My Father and The Breadwinner. Get to know Angelina as not only an actress but as a humanitarian, director and producer. Make sure to bring all your questions and don't forget your camera!
Catch the rap battle of the year
If you love music then this is the event for you. Toronto rapper, Alex Larsen will be sharing the stage at Festival Street with American rapper, Madness for this rap battle showdown. Festival Street is sure to be packed on Thursday, September 7th so get there early! Show starts at 8:30 PM.
Don't miss the Lady Gaga in Concert
And you thought TIFF was only for movie lovers! This year, you can catch Lady Gaga performing an intimate concert at Prince of Wales Theatre following the premiere of her new documentary, Gaga: Five Foot Two. Make sure to mark September 8th down on your calendar.
In addition to ARTO, Festival Street has lots more to discover
So you checked out the ARTO LIFEWTR art installation and now what? Well, there's lots more to do on Festival Street! Each year, Toronto closes off King Street West for a weekend of performances, attractions, free events and even concerts! Screenings will also be taking place here. My personal fave? Mean Girls and The Truman Show which you can catch if you make your way down to King St.
Check out the Art Gallery of Ontario if you're an art enthusiast
The AGO has been partnering up with TIFF since forever and this year, it's no different. There are lots of films to see at #TIFF17 but how will you make your decision? Well, the AGO has rounded up some of the best films that explore the theme of art, culture and creativity to ensure that you don't miss out on some of this year's best films.
The AGO will also be hosting some of the best filmmakers from around the world at their very own Jackman Hall. Perhaps you're not as mainstream as all your other friends? Well, this event is for you.
Get your pre-drink on at some of Toronto's hottest spots
Okay, so it's no wonder that Toronto has some of the best restos and bars in the country which is great because you're going to need somewhere to pre-drink if you're thinking of hitting up some TIFF parties.
Make sure to head to Cactus Club, King Taps, Spoke Club and even Montecito during this year's TIFF. They'll be hosting some pretty sweet parties (perfect time to hit up some rooftop patios) in celebration of some of TIFF's hottest movies. You'll come for the food + drinks and stay for the party.
Unleash your wild side at this year's most prestigious TIFF parties
So I've told you what spots to hit up if you want to get your pre-game on but now it's time to guide you to the best parties this year's TIFF has to offer. While some spots will be hosting ticketed parties every single night during the festival like the ones happening at Mongrel House, there are two parties that you won't want to miss: TIFF Ovation Parties.
For two days straight, the Bell Lightbox will be hosting parties with 4 AM last call. It's a ticketed event but you'll be rewarded with a 6th-floor rooftop view of the city. Hurry up and get your tickets because this is always a sold out event.
And finally, make sure to attend TIFF's Closing Night Gala
After two full weeks of celebrity spotting and incredible parties, there's just one last event to end TIFF with a bang.
The Closing Night Gala will take place at the Bond Hotel this year. Come dress to impress as this is a black-tie affair and there will be people to impress. Best part? The gala is actually a huge fundraiser for sick kids. Get your tickets here.
Whichever way you decide to spend TIFF week, there's one thing that's true: you are guaranteed to have a good time!
