8 Toronto Gluten-Free Restaurants Where You Don't Need To Beware The Wheat

So, gluten’s become kind of a “thing” lately. Suddenly, more and more people are choosing to go for the gluten-free lifestyle, thinking that it’s healthier or some other nonsense. Let me tell you something: It’s bullshit, and it sucks. When I found out I was gluten intolerant, I thought my diet of mac and cheese and assorted hamburgers was about to go down the drain. Alas, as I was in my mourning period, I discovered a few places around the city that make being wheatless not half bad.

490 Queen St. West
Another Queen West favourite, this place offers gluten-free corn meal bread (arepas) from Venezuela, which are naturally gluten-free, so you don’t need to struggle when trying to decipher a menu (trust, I’ve been there). Word on the street is, this place is pretty good, and its adorable outside aesthetic just makes me want go in more.

I’ve heard both good and bad things about this place, mostly from the assorted mishmash Celiacs and vegans that I tend to associate with. The verdict, however, seems to be that it’s pretty darn good. And let’s be real: all pizza is good pizza.

Holy snap, I thought my days of eating crepes were over, but then I found love in a terrible place. Hibiscus makes hella amazing buckwheat crepes and plates them in absolutely beautiful ways. Not only is the entire place just adorable, but it’s super Instagram-worthy. We all know that’s what you’re really after.

Bunner’s Bake Shop
3054 Dundas St. West + 244 Augusta
If you’re into overly sweet pink stuff, this is the place for you. Bunner’s has also opened up a Kensington location as well, where everything they bake, from cupcakes to cakes and brownies and donuts, is 100% gluten-free and vegan. Which, let’s be real, is a bit hard to find. I’ve had a few of their cupcakes, and I’ll be honest: the hype is worth it. Next on my list is their gluten-free vegan cinnamon buns, because I used to LIVE for Cinnabon. Alas, that time has passed.

Though I’ve yet to actually go myself (even though this girl I’m seeing and I have been making plans to go since we met months ago), I’ve heard nothing but positive things about Hogtown, which, while focusing on being vegan, does have gluten-free options available. We really have to go, though-- what I wouldn’t give to taste good mac and cheese again.

The first time I set foot into this West Queen West treasure, I cried a little. A single tear rolled down my cheek because this entire place is allergen-free (including even my personal food aversions, like soy!), sells the best, thickest gluten-free vegan donuts I’ve ever had, AND has a little fridge of gluten-free pasta that doesn’t take like the grocery store cardboard I’m used to choking through. Basically gluten-free heaven on Earth.

There’s a few of these around the city, and they’re the business. I literally get Hero Burger at least once a week. It’s shameful. The gluten-free bun they offer is made with egg bread, so it’s not vegan, but it tastes almost as good as real bread. God, I miss real bread.
