Growing up in Scarborough isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Even though Scarborough has changed tremendously over the past couple of years, it still has a reputation for being "ghetto".
While there are some things about Scarborough that can get annoying at times, there are also a lot of great things about it that are often overlooked. Here are 10 reasons why growing up in Scarborough is actually awesome:
It's the perfect mix of urban and suburban.
Just enough concrete, green parks and Walmarts.
We know all the cool slang; usually before anyone else does.
Scarborough Town Centre is a haven for boredom.
You call it mall ratting; we call it an extracurricular activity. Also, the renovations are looking great so far.
We have access to some of the best global cuisines around.
Jamaican food, Indian food, Chinese food, Filipino food - we have it all.
The Bluffs is a little pocket of paradise right in our backyard.
Bonfires and booze for days.
We still have a way to get downtown, thanks to the RT.
And honestly, the trip isn't so bad. At least we're not as far to downtown as Richmond Hill is.
The Scarborough Ribfest every summer.
We get to meet people from different countries all over the world.
And, for the most part, we grow up appreciating the diversity.
The schools are tight knit communities in themselves.
Scarborough is small enough that people know (or know of) people in other schools within the district.
We learn to appreciate the little things.
You can take the person out of Scarborough, but you can't take the Scarborough out of the person!
