First year is long gone for me yet I still find myself scrolling through university dorm room inspo, so if you're in first year you've probably got a pin board or two dedicated to your future living space.
While cute dorm stuff is the most fun to pick out, it can also crowd up the already small space you're living in, so these 20 essentials act not only as hacks for space and productivity, but they'll also do wonders for your dorm's aesthetic!

Your planner has the potential to become your bible in university. If you use it to record all of your upcoming assignments, projects, midterms and finals you are guaranteed to constantly be on top of your shit at all times.
2. Command hooks
I never thought I would love command hooks so much, but they honestly come in handy so often. Whether you want to use it to act as a spot where you can hang your coats, keys or backpack, it really helps with keeping clutter clear that would otherwise be all over your floor.
3. Shower curtain
Now if you are thinking the shower curtain is for your actual shower, your wrong. One of the most clever hacks I saw first year was when my room mate used a shower curtain and pressure rod to act as a closet door. In most dorms you don't get the luxury of closing up your mess so all of your clothing is constantly in view and can make a room look messier than it actually is.
Those first few months, especially with the projected forecast in Ontario being pretty hot all September, will be hell without air conditioning. Luckily, if you bring a fan with you, you wont spend your nights sweating! Plus fans are a great way to get something that is cute and functional!
5. Laundry bin/bag
It sounds like such a boring item and quite honestly it is but forgetting to bring one to uni means you will have a pile of dirty clothes on your floor at all times and nobody wants that. Luckily some brands make some adorable laundry bags that make shelling out money for one a lot more enjoyable!

1. Solar Powered Iphone Charger
Your phone will never run out of battery! With this portable charger not only do you not have to worry about charging your iPhone all the time, but you won't have to worry about remembering to charge the charger itself before you need it!
2. Wireless Headphones
Whether you are booking it to class or using these for going to the on campus gym, cordless headphones make life 100x easier. You can worry less about your wire getting all tangled either in your bag or while you're using it and worry more about what song you're going to listen to next!
3. Strawberry Computer Mouse
While this isn't the most necessary investment for your dorm room, it definitely is a cute pop of colour that can really bring some personality to your room! Plus mouses can come in handy when you are tired of using your track pad!
3. Mini Rice Cooker
Ok so maybe this isn't an "essential" but look at how cute it is!! Honestly any gadget that is going to make preparing foods that aren't ramen easy is a sound investment in my mind.
4. Extension Cord
Extension cords are an absolute must in university because for some reason dorm rooms only have one or two outlets in the most inconvenient spaces. At the same time though they can be a bit of an eye sore, so get one thats a little more appealing and it'll really make a difference!
Humidifiers are great in general for your skin and breathing, but sometimes they can get a bit pricy and large. This cute one is USB operated so it won't take up any room in your dorm at all but still serves the same purpose on a smaller scale!

1. Fairy Lights
A 2017 university dorm is not complete with the stereotypical fairy lights. They are definitely basic but they really do light up a room and give it a really nice vibe! These lights also help to warm up the cold walls and make the dorm look more homey!
2. Duvet Cover
Duvets are the perfect way to give your room some personality! Since most of the furniture is already in the dorm and is pretty bland, picking a light coloured duvet or something with a nice pattern is guaranteed to give your dorm a major face lift!
3. Removable Wallpaper
Removable wallpaper is a great way to hide those ugly off white walls without damaging anything! It also makes a huge difference in comparison to other dorms because the wallpaper makes the room so lively!
4. Massive Pillow
While they do look like they are placed more for show than use, gigantic pillows are amazing for if you are watching movies, doing homework or catching up on reading in your bed. They help support your back and are really comfortable as well!
5. Wire Wall Grid
These hangable grids are a great way to showcase photos and other memories as well as put up reminders for yourself! Plus it always looks great and spruces up whatever room it's placed in! These also come in colours other than black and white so get creative!

This is a unique spin on classic drinking games but the name pretty much speaks for itself. The game definitely acts as a party starter so get ready for a good time!
This drinking game is a spin on the popular Monopoly game. Involving the classic board, all of the consequences revolve around taking shots and doing dares!
4. Tipsy Tower
Another spin on a classic game, this one takes inspiration from Jenga. While you are trying to make sure your tower doesn't fall, you've got to make sure you don't fall over either!
5. "I've Never..." Bar Cards
This drinking version of 'never have I ever' has the potential to get pretty crazy to say the least. Every card involves drinking so it's safe to say you won't leave the game sober, but since the cards are waterproof you have nothing to worry about!
