Toronto has always been hip and bustling, but Drake has recently allowed it to live up to its hype. He's proud of where he comes from, and he's constantly bombarding his music with references to Toronto, or "The 6" - a little nickname you can thank Drake for. He's an awesome rep for the city, and his love for Toronto is so evident. His international fans now have an idea of how exciting Toronto is. Through him, we have a greater understanding of the city we know and love. Being patriotic has never been cooler.
1. Worst Behaviour
Lyric: "This ain't the son you raised who used to take the Acura at 5 a.m. to go and shoot Degrassi up on Morningside"
Reference: Drake was first brought to the eyes of the media when he played Jimmy Brooks on Degrassi: The Next Generation. The show was filmed at Centennial College, located on Morningside Avenue in Scarborough.
2. You & the 6
Lyric: "You and the six raised me right"
Reference: If the mention of Drake and his mother doesn't make you warm inside, then you should re-evaluate your thinking. In the song dedicated to his mom Sandi, Drake is ever grateful to her loyalty, and of course gives credit to the city that made him into the Raptors loving-mama's boy he is today.
3. Used To
Lyric: "I'll tell 'em link up at the valley at the Hazy"
Reference: "The Hazy" is referring back to the infamous The Hazleton, one of Toronto's most prestigious hotels for various stars to stay in during their visits to Toronto. The Hazleton has reportedly hosted some of the world's biggest celebrities, like Justin Bieber, John Mayer, and Jennifer Lopez.
4. Wu-Tang Forever
Lyric: "Stadium packed, just glad to see the city on the map"
Reference: It doesn't take rocket science to figure out which city Drizzy is talking about seeing on the map.
Lyric: "I take Eglinton to 401 east, and exit at Markham road in the east end"
Reference: If you take the directions in the song, you'll find yourself in Scarborough. Scarborough was, and still is a popular place for the king of Toronto to spend his time. Mostly with his Mom.
Lyric: "I got real ones livin’ past Kennedy Road"
Reference: The Kennedy Road that Drake is mentioning is the one in Scarborough, and it's obvious he's accustomed to life in the East end. We're just wondering if Drake managed to get there via the TTC. If he did, he wasn't joking when he said he started from the bottom.
7. You & the 6
Lyric: "Do you remember back to Weston Road?"
Reference: Drake and his mom lived on Weston Road when times were tough. It's a rough area of Toronto, definitely something Drake was used to before moving to Forest Hill later on.
8. Started From The Bottom
Lyric: "Working all night, traffic on the way home"
Reference: Toronto is notorious for it's hustle and bustle. We're guessing Drizzy is following the decision surrounding the Gardiner Expressway very closely.
