Over the weekend, the internet went crazy for a man they're now calling "salt bae." The commotion started on Sunday when Turkish man Nusret Gökçe shared a video of himself cutting a steak on his Instagram page.

The entire video is spectacularly dramatic but what really got people's attention was the finishing touch: a particularly theatrical sprinkling of salt. The video has inspired countless memes that have dominated social media for the past few days, and thus, saltbae was born.

So who is this mysterious meat lover? Nusret Gökçe is a Turkish steakhouse owner based out of Istanbul. As a child, Gökçe's parents couldn't afford to keep him in school, so he had to drop out and became an assistant butcher. He fell in love with the craft and eventually went to Argentina to learn their secrets of meat preparation before returning to his native Turkey. Today, Gökçe owns and runs a chain of restaurants called Nusr-Et Steakhouses. His Instagram is filled with photos of him gently massaging live animals and posing in front of raw meat.

Gökçe has yet to respond to the social media craze surrounding his Instagram video, but we're sure that when he does, he'll do it in an appropriately sensational manner. In the mean time, here are some of our favourite #saltbae memes.
