"Not A Racist, Just an Idiot" Roseanne Barr Says About Those Tweets
What really happened with those Tweets.
Yesterday everyone was shocked when Roseanne Barr tweeted out a nasty, racist comparison between a woman and an ape. Not only was it enough to upset the internet, Barr managed to get her hit return show Roseanne cancelled on ABC network.
Barr now has a reasoning behind those tweets but the internet is definitely not accepting her apology. The Guardian reports that the TV celebrity went back to Twitter to explain her words and instead placed blame on taking the sleeping pill Adivan, in tweets that have since been deleted. She also said that she was "not a racist, just an idiot."
I apologize. I am now leaving Twitter.— Roseanne Barr (@therealroseanne) May 29, 2018
I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste.— Roseanne Barr (@therealroseanne) May 29, 2018
Over America's Memorial day weekend Barr tweeted out that Valerie Jarrett, a former advisor to Barack Obama, had corrections to the Muslim Brotherhood. The Roseanne star also compared Jarrett to an ape.
ABC Network decided early in the day to cancel the reboot of Barr's series. A statement from the network president Channing Dungey read "Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show."
It was clearly a big decision to cancel Roseanne since it was the network's top running show. Based on the hit original from the late eighties, the show had already received criticism for not being politically correct. But the recent comments even prompted smaller networks to pull their reruns of the original series.
Barr asked fans not to defend her actions but has since been retweeting fans defending her. Her regret is apparent throughout her twitter interactions but many fans are still deeply upset.
hey guys, don't defend me, it's sweet of you 2 try, but...losing my show is 0 compared 2 being labelled a racist over one tweet-that I regret even more.— Roseanne Barr (@therealroseanne) May 30, 2018
viacom pulled all the old Roseanne shows too.— Roseanne Barr (@therealroseanne) May 30, 2018
Though Barr said she was leaving Twitter, she's been active within the past 24 hours. Time will time how the rest of this will play out for this household name but it's clear to see that this childhood classic will be tainted for many people.
