This Is How To Act During The First Run-In With Your Ex, According To A Matchmaker
Awkwardness is inevitable.
After a bad breakup, the last thing you want is to run into your ex. Maybe you're not over it yet, or maybe seeing them will bring up lingering emotions. Either way, nothing good can come from it and it's usually pretty awkward to have to make small talk with someone you were romantically involved with.
Lucky for us, we have the advice of experts to guide us through these harrowing times. Simona Fusco is the Founder and CEO of matchmaking service Perfect 12 Introductions. She recently revealed some of her tips for how to handle an awkward run-in with an ex.
1. Go easy on the physical contact.
An embrace can be too much, but it might seem rude to not greet them in some way. Fusco advise for a "polite smile and nod."
2. Acknowledge the awkwardness.
Fusco says that starting the conversation with a joking, "Well, this is awkward," is a great way to break the ice.
3. Don't try to get revenge by hurting them.
Bragging about how you've moved on is not going to help anyone.
4. Don't rehash the past.
Keep your emotions at bay by keeping the conversation light and casual.
5. End the conversation when appropriate.
Keep it short and sweet. After a quick catch up, end the conversation by a kind comment like, "Well, it was great to see you," says Fusco.
